San Diego to Solvang: A Californian Road Trip

Aerial view of the Pacific Coast Highway

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), winding along California's stunning coastline, is not just a road but an iconic journey through some of the state's most breathtaking landscapes and vibrant towns. Recently, I embarked on a memorable road trip from San Diego to Santa Barbara, experiencing the charm and beauty that this route has to offer.

Day 1: San Diego to Encinitas (30 minutes)

Our adventure began in San Diego, where we landed and promptly rented a convertible—a nod to the classic California road trip experience. After a long drive we decided to keep our drive short the first day, so we opted for beautiful Encinitas, a laid-back beach town known for its surf culture and inviting atmosphere.

Stay

Alila Marea Beach Resort in Encinitas gets an A+ for location. Perched atop the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the resort offered breathtaking views and luxurious accommodations that set the tone for our journey.

Dine

For brunch, Manna Leucadia impressed with its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and relaxed vibe. In the evening, Restaurant Valentina provided a delightful culinary experience with its tapas-style dishes that perfectly complemented the coastal ambiance.

Activities

Downtown Encinitas beckoned with its eclectic mix of shops and cafes. Hansen Surfboards, a local institution, outfitted us with everything we needed to try our hand at surfing—a must-do activity in this surf-centric town. There are also some really incredible state parks in this area. We enjoyed stopping at Carlsbad State Beach for the beautiful beach and a trip to the Camp Store, a casual pizza joint overlooking the ocean. They also have live music most nights.

Day 2: Encinitas to Malibu (2.5 hours)

Leaving Encinitas behind, we continued northward along the PCH, our next stop being Malibu, a name synonymous with coastal luxury and celebrity hideaways.

Stay

The Surfrider Malibu, a refurbished motel turned boutique hotel, captured the essence of Malibu perfectly. Its prime location overlooking the Pacific and the PCH made it an ideal base for exploring the area.

Dine

Malibu Farm, located on the iconic Malibu Pier, offered farm-to-table dining with stunning ocean views—a true Californian experience. For dinner, Nobu Malibu's exquisite sushi, paired with sunset views over the ocean, made for an unforgettable evening.

Activities

We strolled through Malibu Country Mart, a chic shopping destination, and explored Malibu Pier, where local boutiques and eateries showcased the area's laid-back yet sophisticated vibe. There are also some pretty incredible hikes in the area if you want a different perspective of the Malibu coastline.

Day 3: Malibu to Montecito (1.5 hours)

Continuing our journey up the coast, we arrived in Montecito, a charming coastal community known for its pristine beaches and upscale ambiance.
