SPAIN

Spain consistently ranks among Europe’s most visited countries, and for good reason — it has extraordinary variety packed into a relatively compact geography. Our Spain coverage focuses on two very different but equally compelling destinations: Mallorca, the Balearic island that has quietly evolved into one of Europe’s best luxury travel destinations, and Barcelona, one of the great cities of the world.

Everything here is based on real visits. No hotel paid to be featured, and no restaurant review is sponsored.

Where we cover in Spain:

Mallorca — The largest of the Balearic Islands has shed its package-holiday reputation and emerged as one of Europe’s most sophisticated destinations. The north and west of the island — dramatic limestone mountains, hidden coves, ancient olive groves, and a string of beautiful small towns — bear almost no resemblance to the resort-heavy south. Mallorca rewards travelers who explore beyond the obvious, and it’s one of our favorite destinations for families in Europe. See our full Mallorca travel guide for where to stay, eat, and spend your time, and our dedicated guide to where to stay in Mallorca for the best areas broken down by travel style.

Port de Sóller — Our pick for the single best town in Mallorca for families. Tucked into a natural harbor on the island’s northwest coast, Port de Sóller combines a charming, car-free seafront with easy access to the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. It’s the kind of place you plan to spend two nights and end up wanting to stay for a week. Read our full guide to Port de Sóller for families for the best hotels, restaurants, and things to do.

Barcelona — One of Europe’s most vibrant and walkable cities, and significantly more manageable with kids than most people expect. The architecture alone — Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló — is worth the trip. Add a world-class food scene and neighborhood-by-neighborhood character and you have one of the most rewarding city breaks in Europe. See our guide to Barcelona with kids and our roundup of the best restaurants in Barcelona.

Best time to visit Spain: Mallorca is ideal from late April through June and again in September — warm, swimmable, and far less crowded than peak summer. July and August bring the island to capacity, with prices to match. Barcelona is excellent almost year-round, with spring and early autumn being the most comfortable for walking and exploring.
