MEXICO
Mexico is one of the world’s great luxury travel destinations — and one of the most misunderstood. Beyond the all-inclusive resorts of Cancún lies a country of extraordinary variety: dramatic desert coastlines in Baja California, lush Pacific jungles in Nayarit, charming colonial cities, and some of the best hotel properties in North America.
We’ve traveled extensively across Mexico with and without kids, stayed at dozens of properties, and eaten our way through the country’s best restaurants. Everything here is based on real experience — no hotel paid to be featured, and no review is sponsored.
Where we cover in Mexico:
Los Cabos — The southern tip of the Baja Peninsula is home to some of Mexico’s most impressive luxury resorts. One&Only Palmilla, Chileno Bay, Montage Los Cabos, and the new Four Seasons at Cabo Del Sol at Costa Palmas are all here. Most visitors stay along the Tourist Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. See our best hotels in Cabo guide and our honest hotel reviews. Or our best beaches in Cabo guide.Read our full Cabo Travel Guide here.
Tulum — Tulum has evolved from bohemian backpacker destination into one of Mexico’s most design-forward hotel scenes. It’s particularly strong for boutique stays, (we loved La Zebra) jungle settings, and the best restaurant scene outside Mexico City. Read our guide to exploring Tulum with kids.
Sayulita — A laid-back surf town on the Pacific Coast and one of the best places in Mexico to travel with young kids. Small enough to walk everywhere, charming enough to keep you longer than planned. Read about our favorite Restaurants in Sayulita. North of Sayulita, you will find the luxury development with One&Only Mandarina.
Valle de Guadalupe — Mexico’s answer to Napa Valley, located 90 minutes south of San Diego in Baja California. World-class wineries, exceptional outdoor restaurants, and a handful of beautiful boutique hotels make this one of the most underrated destinations in North America. Read our full travel guide for Valle de Guadalupe here.
Mexico City — One of the great cities of the world. Roma Norte and Condesa are the neighborhoods worth knowing — walkable, full of excellent restaurants, and surprisingly easy for families. Read our guide for the perfect long weekend in Mexico City.
Isla Holbox-This tiny (car-free island) off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is one of our favorite places to visit in Mexico. It’s expecially great for families since there are no cars. The food is also one of the highlights (read our guide to the best restaurants here).
Best time to visit Mexico: Cabo and Baja are ideal from October through May, avoiding summer heat and hurricane season. Pacific Coast destinations like Sayulita are best November through April. Tulum and the Yucatán are lovely November through March. Mexico City is pleasant year-round. Read more on the best time month-to-month to visit Cabo.
Not all Cabo beaches are swimmable — most have dangerous currents. This guide breaks down the best beaches in Los Cabos by type: swimmable coves, surf spots, and hotel beaches worth knowing about.
Tulum has become one of the best food destinations in Mexico — jungle tasting menus, beachfront omakase, wood-fired everything. Here’s where to eat right now, broken down by vibe.
The best wineries in Valle de Guadalupe combine world-class wines, dramatic desert landscapes, and some of the best winery restaurants in Mexico. Located about 90 minutes from San Diego in Baja California, the region has become Mexico’s premier wine destination, known for boutique vineyards, innovatic chefs and relaxed tasting experiences.
Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are only 20 miles apart but feel completely different. We’ve stayed in both and break down which is better for families, couples, and first-timers.
Mexico has world-class luxury resorts — but the most memorable stays are often the boutique hotels. Our independent guide to the best boutique properties across Mexico’s most compelling destinations.
Mexico is our most-visited family travel destination. Here are the best luxury resorts for families across Los Cabos, Punta Mita, and the Riviera Maya — every property based on real stays with our two kids.
We spent three nights at Chileno Bay Resort with our two kids over Spring Break. The food was exceptional, the beach is one of the best in Cabo, and the design is gorgeous, but the entry-level rooms are the real problem at this price point. Here’s our honest verdict on whether Chileno Bay is worth it for families.

Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the East Cape are great vacation spots with beautiful views, rich culture, and fun activities for families.
Touristy Cabo San Lucas has a lively scene with landmarks like the Arch and safe swimming at Medano Beach. San José del Cabo is more relaxed, featuring colonial buildings and a vibrant art district.
The East Cape offers stunning beaches and outdoor fun like kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiking.
The One & Only Palmilla in Los Cabos offers a luxurious escape that seamlessly blends traditional Mexican charm with modern elegance. The stunning ocean views from each room provide a breathtaking backdrop, while the spacious accommodations are designed with comfort and sophistication in mind. Families will appreciate the attentive service and wide array of amenities, including a family-friendly pool and a dedicated kids' club offering engaging activities. Overall, the One & Only Palmilla stands out as an ideal destination for families seeking a mix of relaxation and adventure in a picturesque setting.
Roma Norte and Condesa are Mexico City’s most walkable, most delicious, and most visually stunning neighborhoods. Here’s our guide to the best restaurants, parks, coffee shops, and things to do in both.
