The best hotel in Mauritius is One&Only Le Saint Géran, a peninsula resort on the east coast with the island's most famous beach setting. Families should book the Four Seasons at Anahita, which reopened in November 2025 with all-pool villas. Couples do best at The Oberoi on Turtle Bay. Want sunsets instead of sunrises? Head to the west coast and the St. Regis Le Morne.

Why Mauritius, and Why the Hotel Matters So Much
Mauritius sits in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar. It has the lagoons people fly to the Maldives for, plus mountains, sugarcane fields, Creole food and real towns to explore. That's the big difference. You're not stuck on one tiny island for a week.
The catch is that the island is bigger than it looks. Where you stay shapes your whole trip. Sunrise or sunset, wind or calm water, busy or remote. We've stayed at overwater resorts in Bora Bora more than once, and the lesson carries over. In a place this expensive, picking the right resort matters more than anywhere else.
This guide combines research on rates, recent renovations and new openings with the same standard we use for every Boujist list. We haven't reviewed a Mauritius property in person yet. When we do, the full review will be linked here.
Which Coast Should You Stay On?
The east coast around Belle Mare has the island's best-known beaches and the biggest names, including One&Only, Four Seasons, Shangri-La and Constance. You get sunrises and long white sand. It can be breezy in the southern winter, roughly June through August.
The west coast runs from Flic-en-Flac down through Tamarin to Le Morne. It's drier, more sheltered and famous for sunsets. Le Morne is also one of the world's great kitesurfing spots.
The north around Grand Baie has calm lagoon water and the most restaurants and bars. It's the liveliest part of the island and a good pick if you want to leave the resort for dinner.
The south around Bel Ombre is wild and green, with dramatic coastline and far fewer people. It's also one of the easier drives from the airport.
The 10 Best Hotels and Resorts in Mauritius
One&Only Le Saint Géran
This is the name everyone knows, and it still earns it. The resort sits on a private peninsula at Pointe de Flacq on the east coast, with calm lagoon on one side and open ocean on the other. There are 163 rooms and suites, so it's big enough for real energy but never feels like a mega-resort. Expect polished service, multiple restaurants and the kind of beach that ends up on the cover of brochures. Rates on major booking sites have recently landed around $1,000 to $1,500 a night for entry rooms, which sets the bar for the island. If it's your first time and you want the classic Mauritius experience, start here.
Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita
The Four Seasons reopened on November 1, 2025, after a seven-month renovation. London studio 1508 redesigned all 136 villas and residences, and every one has its own heated plunge pool. There are two-, three- and five-bedroom villas, which is a big deal for families or friends traveling together. The resort sits on the east coast between Bambou Mountain and a turquoise lagoon. The overwater Oseyan Spa was rebuilt, and there are eight places to eat, from Japanese omakase at Awase to seafood at Ti Pwason. Guests also get a free daily round of golf at Anahita or on Île aux Cerfs. We've stayed at the Four Seasons Bora Bora twice with our kids, and private-pool villas like these are exactly what make a long-haul family trip work.
The Oberoi Beach Resort
The Oberoi is the quiet one. It has just 71 rooms in pavilions and villas, spread through about 20 acres of gardens on Turtle Bay in the northwest. The bay is a protected marine park, so the snorkeling starts right off the beach. It holds two MICHELIN Keys, and the service gets consistent praise for being warm rather than stiff. Being on the west side means sunset dinners every night. It's our top pick for honeymoons and couples, though families are welcome too.
Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury
Royal Palm is old-school Mauritius glamour, and its regulars come back year after year. It's a small hotel with fewer than 70 suites, all facing the sea on a private beach near Grand Baie in the north. The spa is run with Valmont, and guests can use facilities at the other Beachcomber resorts on the island. Pick it if you want intimate, formal service and easy access to Grand Baie's restaurants.
Shangri-La Le Touessrok
Le Touessrok is the east coast's other heavyweight. It has around 200 rooms, suites and villas, including the Frangipani wing and private beach villas with direct sand access. The resort has been through a recent renovation, and its size means plenty of restaurant and pool choice. It's a strong option for multi-generational groups who want variety without leaving the property.
Constance Prince Maurice
Prince Maurice sits on a private stretch of the northeast coast near Poste de Flacq. It's known for its restaurant floating on a mangrove lagoon, which is one of the most memorable dinners on the island. The vibe is calm and grown-up, with suites tucked into gardens and along the water. Choose it if you want east coast beaches with a more intimate feel than the bigger resorts nearby.
The St. Regis Le Morne Resort
This one has a strange history. It was a St. Regis, became a JW Marriott in 2021, then switched back to St. Regis on May 6, 2025. The upgrade brought back butler service and a refreshed menu at Le Manoir, which focuses on refined Mauritian curries. It's all-suite, with 172 suites plus a Grand Beachfront Villa that sleeps up to 16. The setting on the UNESCO-listed Le Morne peninsula is stunning, and it's the place to stay if anyone in your group kitesurfs.
Heritage Le Telfair
Heritage Le Telfair is our pick for the south coast. It's all-suite, with 158 suites set inside a protected nature reserve at Bel Ombre. The Gourmet Bliss meal plan lets you eat across a dozen restaurants on the wider Heritage estate, so you won't get bored at dinner. There's also an adults-only wing with its own pool and butler service. That mix makes it work for families and couples alike.
LUX* Grand Baie
LUX* Grand Baie opened in December 2021 as the brand's flagship. It's the most design-forward resort on this list, with a modern, almost urban feel compared to the classic east coast names. It sits right in Grand Baie, so restaurants and bars are close. Book it if you want a younger, social atmosphere.
Legend Hill Resort & Spa
Legend Hill is the island's most interesting newcomer. It opened in 2025 on the slopes of La Tourelle mountain above Tamarin on the west coast, with sweeping views over the Le Morne lagoon. Most stays are apartments, penthouses and villas, many with private pools. The signature restaurant, 1812, is led by Michelin-starred chef Glenn Viel, and there's a more casual bistro called BView. It's not on the beach, so you'll shuttle down to the sand. Opening rates started around €255 a night, well below the beachfront icons.

How to Choose the Right Mauritius Resort
Start with who's coming. Families should look hard at the Four Seasons, where every villa has a pool and some have up to five bedrooms. Heritage Le Telfair is the other strong family hotel, with the bonus of an adults-only wing if grandparents or a second couple are along. For more family ideas in a similar setting, see our best family resorts in French Polynesia.
Couples and honeymooners should book The Oberoi or Constance Prince Maurice. Both are small and calm. If you want a bigger resort with more going on, One&Only Le Saint Géran is the safe bet.
Then think about the coast. Pick the east for beaches and sunrises, the west for sunsets and drier weather, and the north if you want to go out for dinner. If you're traveling in June, July or August, the west and north are usually more sheltered from the trade winds.
Finally, decide how much you want to spend. One&Only sets the high-water mark at roughly $1,000 and up per night. Legend Hill launched at a fraction of that, if you're happy to trade a beachfront room for a view.
Best Time to Visit and Book Mauritius Hotels and Resorts
The sweet spot is May through December, when it's drier and less humid. September through November is our favorite window. The water is warm, the weather is reliable, and you beat the holiday rate spike.
January through March is hot, humid and the heart of cyclone season. Resorts stay open, and you'll sometimes find better rates, but build some flexibility into your plans. June through August is the cooler southern winter. It's great for kitesurfing at Le Morne but windier on the east coast.
Christmas, New Year and European school holidays are peak season. For those dates, book six to nine months out, especially for multi-bedroom villas, which sell first.
FAQ
What is the best hotel in Mauritius?
One&Only Le Saint Géran is the best all-around hotel in Mauritius. It has the island's most famous beach setting on a private east coast peninsula. Families may prefer the Four Seasons at Anahita for its private-pool villas.
Which side of Mauritius is best to stay on?
The east coast has the best beaches and the biggest luxury resorts. The west coast is drier and better for sunsets. The north is liveliest, and the south is the most remote and dramatic.
Is Mauritius good for families?
Yes. Calm lagoons, plenty to do off the resort and big villa options make it a great family pick. The Four Seasons and Heritage Le Telfair are the strongest family resorts. If you're weighing other island trips with kids, read our take on French Polynesia with kids.
Is Mauritius or the Maldives better?
Mauritius is better if you want variety. You get mountains, hikes, food and towns alongside the beach. The Maldives is better if you want an overwater villa and nothing else to do.
How many nights do you need in Mauritius?
Plan on at least seven nights. The long-haul flight makes a short trip hard to justify. Ten nights lets you split between two coasts.

Rates usually soften outside Christmas, New Year and European school holidays. The January to March cyclone season can bring deals, but the weather is less predictable.
Is there a St. Regis in Mauritius?
Yes. The St. Regis Le Morne Resort reopened under the St. Regis name on May 6, 2025, after four years as a JW Marriott.
