Best Hotels in Zakynthos (2026): Where to Stay, by Area
The verdict: Zakynthos splits by coast, and the east is where the good hotels are. Porto Zante Villas & Spa at Tragaki is the top of the market, a handful of beachfront villas with private heated pools on their own sand. Lesante Blu next door is the adults-only pick and has been showing from around $300 a night in shoulder season, with Lesante Cape on the north coast at roughly $360. Domes Aulus Zante on Laganas Bay is the all-inclusive family answer at about €331 a night. The Bay Hotel & Suites in Vasilikos is the value play at around $154. Before you book anything, know this: Navagio, the shipwreck beach, is closed to landings through at least 31 October 2026. The clifftop viewpoint and offshore boat viewing are open. Don't plan a trip around walking on that sand, because you can't.
A note on Navagio
Navagio Beach, the cove with the rusting wreck of the MV Panagiotis, has been closed to landings since 2022 after repeated landslides. Greek authorities have extended that closure, and access to the beach and the surrounding waters is prohibited for at least the 2026 season, through 31 October. You cannot walk on the sand, swim in the bay or approach the wreck. There are no tickets sold for beach access, and any operator promising a landing is not being straight with you.
What is open: the clifftop viewing platform above Anafonitria, reached by road via Volimes, with free entry, a small paid parking area and a reinforced safety railing. That's where the famous photograph is taken from anyway. Also open are boat tours that hold position offshore at the mouth of the bay, typically from Porto Vromi or Agios Nikolaos, and the Blue Caves on the north coast, which are unaffected.
The practical upshot for your booking: Navagio is a half-day from anywhere on the island and shouldn't drive where you stay. What should drive it is the other thing Zakynthos has, which is genuinely world-class and completely open.
The turtles, and why they shape the island
The Gulf of Laganas holds the largest concentration of loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the Mediterranean, somewhere around 1,200 to 1,500 nests a season, inside the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. Peak nesting runs late May through late August and hatching from late July into mid-October.
This matters for where you stay in two ways. It's why the southern beaches have access restrictions and closure zones in season, and it's why a chunk of the south coast has stayed less developed than it otherwise would have. If turtles are part of the reason you're going, book only NMPZ-licensed operators, expect to pay somewhere in the €35 to €55 range per person for a decent guided trip, and steer clear of the unlicensed swim-with-turtles boats around Keri and Marathonisi.
Choosing your coast
Tragaki and Tsilivi, on the east coast just north of Zakynthos Town, is where the island's best hotels are concentrated. Calm water, easy access to the airport and town, and the highest density of five-star properties. This is where most people should book.
Akrotiri and the north, above Tsilivi, is quieter and more dramatic, with the Blue Caves and the Navagio viewpoint closer. Fewer options, but the ones that exist are serious.
Vasilikos, the southeast peninsula, is the quiet one. Long sandy beaches, protected turtle nesting at Gerakas, and far less development. Good value and a real sense of space, at the cost of driving for everything.
Kalamaki and Laganas, on the south coast, is where the all-inclusive resorts and the nightlife both are. Laganas itself has a well-earned reputation as a party strip and is not where you want to be unless that's the point. Kalamaki next door is calmer and the airport is close.
Zakynthos Town is the practical base, with the ferry port, the best restaurants outside the resorts, and a proper Greek town that isn't built for tourists. Limited beach.
The east coast: Tragaki and Tsilivi
Porto Zante Villas & Spa
The top of the Zakynthos market and one of the more exclusive properties in the Ionian. It's a small collection of beachfront villas at Tragaki, each with a private heated pool and garden, set on a private stretch of sand in a secluded bay.
The villa fit-out is old-school luxury rather than contemporary Greek: Bang & Olufsen systems, marble bathrooms with spa baths, Bulgari amenities, Armani Casa robes. Two restaurants, one Greek and Mediterranean in a beachfront setting and one contemporary Asian, plus 24-hour in-villa dining, a waterfront spa, a kids' club and private yacht excursions.
The scale is the point. Guest accounts describe a property of around seven villas, which is why it feels like a private estate rather than a hotel.
Book it for: a milestone, a family who want a villa with hotel service, total privacy on a beach. Skip it if: you want to feel like you're on a Greek island rather than in a compound.
Lesante Blu
The adults-only pick, and the best-value five-star on the island. It sits on the east coast at Tragaki with views across to Kefalonia, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, with beachfront cabanas, infinity pools, a spa and a quiet private beach.
Shoulder-season rates have been showing from around $300 a night, which for a Leading Hotels property with this setting is a strong number.
Book it for: a couples' trip where you want five-star without children anywhere near it.
Lesante Classic
The family sibling in Tsilivi, a Preferred Hotels & Resorts member, right on the beach. Four restaurants plus a street-food canteen, the Soma Spa, a kids' club and a pet-friendly policy, which is rarer than it should be at this level.
If you want the Lesante service standard with children in tow, this is the one rather than Blu.
Olea All Suite Hotel
The design choice. It's an all-suite property near Tsilivi built around some genuinely ambitious architecture and a run of infinity pools, and it consistently sits at the top of the island's guest rankings. Roughly four miles from the airport. This is the one to hotel if the aesthetic matters as much as the service.
Contessina Suites & Spa and Zante Maris Suites
Two adults-only boutiques worth knowing. Contessina is the more elegant and romantic, with strong guest scores, and Zante Maris is the smaller and more intimate of the pair. Both sit below the Lesante properties on price and above the mid-market on quality.
The north: Akrotiri
Lesante Cape
The most remote of the three Lesante properties, on the north coast at Akrotiri with untouched beaches below and Ionian views. A Leading Hotels of the World member, and the one that offers the full private-service layer: chauffeur and butler service, a personal chef, private excursions, and arrangements for jets and helicopters.
Rates have been showing around $360 a night in shoulder season, which is not much more than Blu for a considerably more secluded setting. The trade is that you're further from everything, which for some people is the entire appeal.
Cielo Luxury Villas
The villa option in the same area, for groups or families who want space and self-catering with a view rather than a resort.
The southeast: Vasilikos
The Bay Hotel & Suites
The value pick on this page, and a good one. It's on the Vasilikos peninsula with beach access, sea views and a spa, showing around $154 a night in shoulder season. Vasilikos is the quiet corner of Zakynthos. Gerakas and Banana beaches are close, the turtle nesting areas are protected, and the development is a fraction of what you find on the south coast. You will be driving for dinner, and that's the trade.
Book it for: a beach week at half the price of the east coast, with more space around you.
Alexandra Beach Resort & Spa
The other established Vasilikos option, larger and more conventional, in a similar price band. Solid rather than exciting, and a reasonable family booking.
The south: Kalamaki and Laganas
Domes Aulus Zante, Autograph Collection
The all-inclusive family answer, and a genuinely good one. It sits beachfront at Kalamaki-Pefkakia on Laganas Bay, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection and run by Domes, with five restaurants, four bars, two outdoor pools, a children's pool, a kids' club and a vegetable garden.
Rates for a five-star all-inclusive with that food offering are competitive. The location is the double-edged part. You're on the loggerhead nesting bay, which the hotel makes a point of protecting and which is a real feature if your children care about it. You're also a short walk from Laganas town, which has the nightlife, the shops and the reputation. Kalamaki side is the quieter end, and that's where the property sits.
Book it for: families who want everything included and don't want to cook or drive. Skip it if: Laganas within walking distance sounds like a problem rather than an option.
Meandros Boutique Hotel & Spa
The closest good hotel to the airport, in Kalamaki, and the sensible pick for a couples' stay on this coast or a first or last night around a flight.
Zakynthos Town
Bitzaro Boutique Hotel and Phoenix Hotel
The two town options worth booking. Bitzaro is the boutique choice and also works as a mid-range pick, and Phoenix sits on Solomos Square looking over the marina. Strada Marina is the one closest to the ferry port if you're island-hopping to Kefalonia.
Staying in town means restaurants that locals actually use and no beach. For two or three nights, or as bookends around a ferry, it works well.
How to choose
If money isn't the constraint, Porto Zante. There's nothing else on the island in that category.
If you want adults-only five-star at a sensible price, Lesante Blu, and check Lesante Cape at the same time, because the gap between them is smaller than you'd expect.
If you want seclusion and full private service, Lesante Cape.
If design is what moves you, Olea All Suite Hotel.
If you're travelling with children and want everything included, Domes Aulus Zante.
If you want the Lesante standard with kids, Lesante Classic in Tsilivi rather than Blu.
If you want value and space, The Bay Hotel & Suites in Vasilikos, and accept that you'll drive for dinner.
If you're here for the turtles, stay in Vasilikos for Gerakas or on Laganas Bay, and book licensed NMPZ operators only.
If you're pairing Zakynthos with Kefalonia, stay in Zakynthos Town at least one night for the ferry.
Best time to visit Zakynthos, and when to book
May and June are the best months. Everything is open, the sea warms through May, rates sit well below peak, and the island isn't yet full. June also catches the start of nesting season.
July and August are peak for prices, crowds and heat. Peak August rooms at the good properties tend to sell out by May, and Laganas is at its loudest. This is also the best window for hatching, which begins in late July.
September is the one we'd book. Warm water, thinning crowds, softer pricing, and hatching continues into October.
October is quiet and cheap, with the caveat that the Navagio closure runs to 31 October and some properties close for the season.
On booking: the island runs a wide price range across the year, and the five-star east coast properties move a long way between shoulder and peak. Book by spring for July and August. Outside that, Zakynthos is one of the better-value Greek islands at the luxury end, which is most of its argument against Santorini.
Getting to Zakynthos
Zakynthos International Airport sits about two miles from Zakynthos Town, with seasonal flights from across Europe and connections via Athens. That's the main way in, and the short transfer times are a real advantage over islands where you land an hour from your hotel.
Ferries run to Kyllini on the Peloponnese mainland and north to Kefalonia, which makes a two-island trip straightforward.
You'll want a car. The good beaches, the Navagio viewpoint and the Vasilikos peninsula all need one, and the island is large enough that taxis add up fast.
If you're comparing Greek islands, our Paros travel guide and the best hotels in Paros cover the Cyclades side of the decision, and Paros vs Mykonos works through the same trade-offs. For what the beach scene looks like in the Cyclades by comparison, the best beach clubs in Paros is the closest equivalent.
FAQ
What is the best hotel in Zakynthos? Porto Zante Villas & Spa at Tragaki is the most exclusive, a small set of beachfront villas with private pools. Lesante Blu is the best adults-only five-star for the money, and Domes Aulus Zante is the strongest all-inclusive family option.
Is Navagio Beach open in 2026? No, not for landings. The beach and its surrounding waters are closed through at least 31 October 2026 following landslide risk assessments. The clifftop viewpoint above Anafonitria is open and free, and boat tours view the cove from offshore. Any operator offering a landing this season is not legitimate.
How much do hotels in Zakynthos cost per night? Around $154 for good value in Vasilikos, roughly $300 at Lesante Blu and $360 at Lesante Cape in shoulder season, and about €331 all-inclusive at Domes Aulus. Porto Zante sits well above all of these. Peak July and August rates run materially higher across the board.
Where should I stay in Zakynthos? Tragaki and Tsilivi on the east coast for the best hotels, Vasilikos for quiet and value, Kalamaki for all-inclusive resorts near the airport, Akrotiri in the north for seclusion, and Zakynthos Town for practicality. Avoid Laganas unless nightlife is the point.
When can you see the turtles in Zakynthos? Nesting peaks from late May through late August in the Gulf of Laganas, and hatching runs from late July into mid-October. Use only operators licensed by the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, expect around €35 to €55 per person, and skip the unlicensed swim-with-turtles boats.
Do I need a car in Zakynthos? Yes for most trips. The island is large, the best beaches are spread out, and the Navagio viewpoint is remote with limited public transport. An all-inclusive stay at Kalamaki is the main exception.
Is Zakynthos better than Santorini? For value at the luxury end, yes, Zakynthos has better beaches, shorter airport transfers and lower rates for comparable properties. Santorini has the caldera, the volume of five-star inventory and the name. Zakynthos suits people who want a beach holiday rather than a view.
Which Zakynthos hotels are adults only? Lesante Blu, Contessina Suites & Spa, Zante Maris Suites and St John Suites are the main ones. Lesante Classic and Domes Aulus are the family-facing alternatives from the same tier.
How many nights do you need in Zakynthos? Five to seven for a proper beach week. Three or four covers Navagio's viewpoint, a turtle trip and a couple of beaches, but you'll be moving most days.
