North Shore or South Shore: Decide This First

The east side, Lihue through Kapaa along the Coconut Coast, is the practical middle. The resort holds 252 rooms and suites, and Lihue Airport sits about 29 miles away, roughly ten minutes past the town of Hanalei.
The view is the reason to book. Almost every room looks straight down the bay at the Makana ridge, and it is genuinely one of the great hotel views anywhere. The 1 Hotels design language, which leans heavily on reclaimed wood and native planting, suits Kauai better than it suits most cities. There is a Bamford Wellness Spa with ocean float, infrared sauna, and hyperbaric oxygen, a main pool with hot tub nooks, and a lagoon pool with waterfalls down by the beach. The appeal is space and calm. You get a full residence with a real kitchen and laundry, so this works well for multigenerational groups and for anyone staying a week or longer. The Ocean Course at Hokuala is Kauai's only Jack Nicklaus Signature course and holds the longest stretch of oceanfront golf in Hawaii, with tennis and pickleball courts on site as well. The catch is that there is no beach. You are inland, and you drive to Poipu Beach or Shipwreck. For a lot of travelers that is a dealbreaker and we would not argue. Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa

The Grand Hyatt sits on fifty acres above Shipwreck Beach in Poipu, and it is built at a scale nothing else on the island attempts. The location is as good as Poipu gets. You are on the beach, you can walk to Brennecke's and Poipu Beach Park, and the sunsets from the oceanfront rooms are incredible. Rooms were refreshed in recent years and read clean and current rather than dated tropical. Red Salt, the restaurant, is a genuine dinner destination rather than a hotel obligation.
Families can make it work, but the property is not built for them, and the pool is modest. Expect $600 to $900 for most of the year, with oceanfront categories running meaningfully higher.

The location puts you next door to the best dining and shopping on the South Shore, and Lihue Airport is under fourteen miles away. The trade is that you are not oceanfront. Poipu Beach is about a half mile off, which is a short drive or a walk depending on your tolerance and your kids.
