Best Hotels in Sun Valley

The most important thing to know before booking is that Sun Valley and Ketchum are two different places, and the good skiing is next to neither of them by default. Bald Mountain is the real mountain, and its two bases sit on the Ketchum side. Sun Valley Lodge, the famous one, sits beside Dollar Mountain, which is the beginner hill. Book the Lodge for the history and the spa and accept a shuttle. Book Limelight Ketchum if you want to walk to the River Run lift and to dinner. Knob Hill Inn is the boutique alternative. Expect $300 to $800 a night in peak season, which is roughly half what Aspen charges for a mountain that is arguably better.

Sun Valley is the most underrated ski destination in America, and the reason is a marketing accident. It was the first purpose-built destination ski resort in the country, opened in 1936 by Union Pacific, home to the world's first chairlift, and the place Hollywood came before Aspen existed. Hemingway finished For Whom the Bell Tolls in a room here and is buried in the cemetery in Ketchum.

Then Vail and Aspen happened, Sun Valley kept doing what it was doing, and forty years later it has one of the best mountains in America with almost nobody on it.

Bald Mountain, called Baldy locally, has 3,400 feet of consistent, uninterrupted pitch and no flat runouts, which makes it a genuinely great skier's mountain rather than a scenic one. The grooming is among the best in the country. Lift lines are essentially not a thing.

The catch is lodging. Sun Valley has no Auberge, no Four Seasons, no Aman. What it has is a historic grand lodge, a very good Limelight, and a handful of independents. If you are coming from Aspen or Deer Valley, calibrate for that.

Understanding the geography first

This trips up almost everyone.

Sun Valley is the resort village, a compound built around Sun Valley Lodge with an ice rink, shops, and its own restaurants. It sits beside Dollar Mountain, the beginner hill.

Ketchum is the actual town, a mile down the road, where the restaurants, bars, galleries, and most of the good hotels are.

Bald Mountain, the mountain you came for, has two bases. River Run is on the Ketchum edge. Warm Springs is on the far side, about ten minutes' drive.

So the famous hotel is not near the good skiing, and the good skiing is walkable from town. Shuttles run and they work well, but plan around this rather than being surprised by it.

Sun Valley Lodge

The historic one, and worth staying in once for what it is. Opened in 1936, rebuilt from the inside in 2015, with a 20,000-square-foot spa that is the best in Idaho and probably the best between Utah and the coast.

The building carries its history properly. Photographs of Gary Cooper and Clark Gable line the corridors, the outdoor pool is heated year-round and steams in the snow, and the ice rink outside has been in continuous use since the thirties.

Rooms are large and comfortable rather than design-forward. This is a grand American resort hotel, not a boutique property, and it is confident about that.

The location caveat matters. You are next to Dollar Mountain, which is fine for beginners and irrelevant for everyone else. Shuttles run to both Baldy bases and are reliable.

Roughly $400 to $800 in peak season.

Limelight Hotel Ketchum

The best all-round choice, and the one we would book. Owned and run by Aspen Skiing Company, so if you have stayed at the Limelights in Aspen or Snowmass you know the format: contemporary, well-run, a big lobby fireplace and living room that people actually use, free breakfast, and a pool.

The location is the argument. It is walking distance to Ketchum's restaurants and a short walk or complimentary shuttle to the River Run base. That combination, town and mountain both on foot, is what Sun Valley Lodge cannot offer.

Pet friendly, and genuinely good with families.

Roughly $300 to $600.

Knob Hill Inn

The boutique option and the most European property in Idaho. Austrian-influenced, small, family-run, with a spa, an indoor pool, and a restaurant that punches above the hotel's size.

It sits in Ketchum with a shuttle to the mountain. Quieter and more personal than the Limelight, and the choice for couples who want somewhere with a bit of character rather than a well-run chain property.

Roughly $250 to $450.

Tamarack Lodge

The value pick with a real location. Central Ketchum, walkable to everything in town, with an indoor pool and a hot tub. Rooms are straightforward and the building is unremarkable.

What you are paying for is being able to walk to dinner and take the free town bus to the lifts, at a rate well below the Limelight.

hotel ketchum room with two queens in sun valley idaho

Hotel Ketchum

The design-led budget option, contemporary, with free bikes in summer and a young feel. Around a mile from Sun Valley village and a short ride to River Run.

The best-looking room in Ketchum under $350, and the pick for a shorter trip where the hotel is somewhere to sleep rather than part of the holiday.

Best Western Tyrolean Lodge

Included because of where it is, not what it is. This is the closest conventional hotel to the River Run base at about a third of a mile, which makes the ski-in question close to moot.

An Austrian-style lodge with a heated outdoor pool, and considerably better than the brand name suggests. If proximity to the lift is what you care about and you would rather spend the money on lift tickets, this is the answer.

Elkhorn and the Sun Valley condos

Worth knowing about for groups and longer stays. The Elkhorn area and the Village Condominiums at Sun Valley Resort offer apartment-style lodging with kitchens, which for a family of five over a week costs meaningfully less than hotel rooms.

You will drive or shuttle to everything. The trade is space.

Which are genuinely ski-in ski-out

None of them, and it is worth saying plainly because Sun Valley marketing is loose about it.

Best Western Tyrolean and Limelight Ketchum are the closest walks to River Run. Everything else involves a shuttle or a drive. Sun Valley Lodge is slopeside to Dollar Mountain, which is not the mountain you came for.

This is normal here. Baldy rises straight out of the valley floor with almost no developable land at its base, which is also why the mountain has stayed uncrowded.

BEST TIME TO VISIT AND BOOK

The season runs late November to mid-April, with the most reliable conditions from January through March.

February is the strongest month, with the deepest base and Idaho's characteristically dry, cold snow. Sun Valley gets less total snowfall than the Wasatch or the Colorado high country, but it also gets far more sun, and the snowmaking here is among the most extensive in North America, which makes early season more dependable than the raw numbers suggest.

March is the local's month. Long days, soft afternoons, and a mountain that was already empty getting emptier.

The one thing to plan around is the airport. Friedman Memorial in Hailey is fourteen miles from Ketchum and takes direct flights from several western hubs, which is the convenient option. It also sits in a valley and cancels or diverts in weather with some regularity, and a diversion usually means Twin Falls and a long drive. Boise is two and a half to three hours away and is the reliable fallback. Build a buffer day if you are flying into SUN around a holiday.

On cost: Sun Valley runs roughly half of Aspen and well below Deer Valley for comparable rooms, and lift tickets follow the same pattern. Sun Valley is on the Ikon pass, which is the cheapest way to ski it if you are skiing elsewhere in the season too.

On booking: Christmas, New Year, and Presidents' week need three to four months, and Sun Valley Lodge is the tightest of the group. Outside those, six to eight weeks is usually comfortable, and January midweek can often be booked inside a month. This is one of the few destination resorts in America where late booking still works.
