PORT DE SÓLLER: Best Town for Families in Mallorca
View of Port de Soller from our villa rental
If you are planning a family trip to Mallorca and trying to decide where to stay, Port de Sóller might be the island’s best base. Tucked into a protected horseshoe-shaped bay on Mallorca’s northwest coast, Port de Sóller offers something surprisingly rare in Mallorca: a walkable beach town with calm water, beautiful scenery, and excellent restaurants all within a few minutes of each other. For families, that combination is hard to beat.
The town sits between the Mediterranean and the dramatic Tramuntana mountains, creating a setting that feels both coastal and alpine. Children can spend their days swimming in gentle water, riding a vintage tram, and eating gelato along the promenade while parents enjoy some of the best scenery on the island.
It’s relaxed, scenic, and far less chaotic than many of Mallorca’s resort areas.
Why Port de Sóller Is Perfect for Families
A Calm, Safe Beach
The biggest reason families love Port de Sóller is the beach. The town sits inside a natural bay, which means the water stays calm and shallow even when other parts of Mallorca are windy.
There are two main beaches:
• Platja d’en Repic
• Platja des Traves
Both have soft sand and gentle water that is ideal for younger swimmers. Unlike many Mediterranean beach towns, everything is extremely close together. Restaurants, playgrounds, and cafés sit directly along the promenade, so parents can relax while kids play in the sand just steps away.
A Completely Walkable Town
Another huge advantage is that you barely need a car. The waterfront promenade is flat and lined with restaurants, ice-cream shops, and small boutiques. That makes it easy to explore with strollers or younger children. The entire town can be explored on foot in about 15 minutes. Even better, the famous vintage tram runs through the center of the promenade connecting the port with the inland town of Sóller.
Kids love riding it.

The Famous Sóller Tram Ride
One of the highlights of staying here is the historic tram that runs between Port de Sóller and the town of Sóller. The tram dates to the early 1900s and still runs along its original route through orange groves and gardens. For children it feels like a theme-park ride. Once in Sóller you can explore the town square, visit the Saturday market, or connect to the historic train that runs through the mountains to Palma.
Incredible Scenery
Port de Sóller is surrounded by the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO-protected mountain range. That means the views are spectacular. Unlike many parts of Mallorca that feel heavily developed, Port de Sóller feels tucked into nature. The town sits in a dramatic bay framed by mountains, creating one of the most beautiful settings on the island. For families who like a mix of beach and outdoor adventure, it’s ideal. There are hiking trails, boat trips, and scenic drives all within minutes of town.

The best months to visit Port de Sóller with kids are:
May – June: Warm weather and fewer crowds.

July and August are beautiful but significantly busier.
