Four Seasons Explorer Palau Review (2026): Is It Worth It?

The short answer: Four Seasons Explorer is the best way to see Palau, full stop. It's a small luxury catamaran that moves you through the Rock Islands, with up to three dives or snorkels a day, excellent food, and a crew that will bend the itinerary to fit what you want. It's stable enough that a seasickness-prone traveler never felt it. We stayed three nights and would have happily stayed a fourth.

What Four Seasons Explorer Actually Is

Think of it as a floating resort, not a cruise. The Explorer is a 127-foot, three-deck luxury yacht with just eleven accommodations: 10 staterooms and one suite. As a shallow-draft catamaran, it can slip into the Rock Islands' channels and lagoons instead of anchoring offshore like bigger boats. So you wake up somewhere new, and usually somewhere beautiful, every morning. It's also flexible in a way traditional liveaboards aren't. The Explorer offers daily embarkation and disembarkation with no minimum stay, which is exactly what let us pair it with a resort stay on land.

The Boat

Beautiful. It has every amenity you'd wish for, and then some. There are two decks of outdoor space for sun, sunsets, and staring at the water. Inside, a large air-conditioned parlor works for meals, reading, or a board game after a long day in the water. The cabin was spacious enough and well-appointed. The real surprise was the motion. Or the lack of it. The boat is designed to reduce movement, so walking around while underway felt easy. I'm prone to seasickness and never once felt it. At night, we genuinely couldn't tell we were moving. If you've ruled out boat-based travel because of your stomach, this is the one to reconsider.

The Food

Wonderful, every meal. The chefs will adjust anything for preferences or allergies without making it a thing. Eating well after three dives a day matters more than you'd think, and they nailed it.

A Day on Board

Every day is full, but you choose how full. Mornings can start with sunrise yoga. From there you have up to three dives or snorkels, including night dives and night snorkels if you're up for it. Between those, there's kayaking, paddleboarding, and massages. The massages are the only thing that costs extra. Everything else is included.

We also spent time on the mainland learning about Palauan culture and visiting local sustainable businesses. Back on board, an educational presentation on Palau's coral and ocean life made every dive after it more interesting. You start recognizing what you're looking at. After each day, the crew edits footage of everything you did, and you watch it together after dinner. It's a genuinely fun way to relive the day. At the end, they hand you a manta ray USB-C stick with every video on it.

The Crew

So kind, and so helpful. To make an evening special for us, they set a dinner table on the top deck with string lights and our own live musician. We didn't ask for it. They just did it. That sums up the service.

The Itinerary (and Why It Bends)

The Explorer follows a general weekly itinerary, but the crew is incredibly accommodating. We really wanted to see Jellyfish Lake, which usually happens on a day we wouldn't be on board. They made it happen anyway. That day we did two morning dives and a night dive so we still got all three in. It's rare to find that kind of flexibility at any price point.

If there's somewhere specific you want to go, tell them early. They'll work it in if they can.

How Much Does Four Seasons Explorer Cost?

This is a serious splurge, but it's more inclusive than it first looks. When it launched in Palau, rates started from about $2,800 per cabin per night for two. Current pricing runs higher, with recent listings showing average standard-room rates in the mid-$4,000s to low-$5,000s per night, and guests reporting around $4,000 a night with taxes and fees. That covers meals, diving with all gear, snorkeling, and shore excursions. Private dive guides and dive courses cost extra.

To anchor that: you're paying roughly what a top overwater villa costs elsewhere, but meals, diving, excursions, and your daily video are already in. Rates shift by season and booking channel, so check your dates directly.

How Many Nights Should You Book?

We stayed three and think four would have been perfect. Three nights gives you a real feel for the rhythm. A fourth would've let us slow down and repeat favorite sites.

We also loved combining the boat with a resort stay on the mainland. The Explorer gives you the water. Land gives you the rest of the island. We'd book it that way again.

Best Time to Visit Palau and Book the Explorer

Palau's drier months, roughly November through April, are the most popular for calm seas and visibility. Because the boat has only eleven cabins, peak dates fill fast. Book several months out if your dates are fixed. If you want the Explorer Suite, book even earlier since there's only one.

Who It's Right For (and Who It Isn't)

It's ideal for couples, strong swimmers, curious snorkelers, and divers who want great diving without roughing it. It's also more leisurely than typical liveaboards, which often run four or five dives a day versus the Explorer's three. Hardcore divers chasing maximum bottom time may prefer a traditional dive boat. Everyone else will be spoiled for life.

Should You Book Four Seasons Explorer?

Yes. If Palau is on your list, this is how to do it. It compares well against our other favorite ocean-first luxury stays, like Four Seasons Bora Bora and the remote Bawah Reserve in Indonesia. But nothing else we've tried puts you on this many reefs in this much comfort.

FAQ

Is Four Seasons Explorer worth the price?

For us, completely. Meals, diving, gear, excursions, and cultural outings are included, so the nightly rate covers far more than a typical luxury hotel room. Massages are the only extra we encountered.

Will I get seasick on Four Seasons Explorer?

I'm prone to seasickness and never felt it. The catamaran is designed to minimize motion, and we couldn't feel it moving at night.

Can you visit Jellyfish Lake from Four Seasons Explorer?

Yes. It's on the regular itinerary, though usually on a specific day. The crew rearranged our schedule so we could go.

Do you need to be a certified diver?

No. Snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and cultural excursions fill the days beautifully. Divers get up to three dives a day, including night dives.

How long should you stay on Four Seasons Explorer?

We'd recommend four nights. Three is great, and there's no minimum, so you can pair it with a land stay easily.

What's included in a Four Seasons Explorer stay?

All meals, diving and snorkeling, water sports, cultural excursions, the marine education talk, and the daily trip video. Spa treatments cost extra, as do private dive guides and dive courses.
