Borgo Egnazia had been on my bucket list ever since Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel got married there years ago — which tells you something about the kind of property it is. We finally made it this summer as part of a multi-generational trip to Puglia: nine people, four kids under the age of eight, three adjacent rooms. A week in July. Here's what we found.

The Quick Version

The design is extraordinary — it genuinely looks and feels like an ancient Puglian village, and the attention to that detail is consistent throughout the property. La Festa del Borgo is one of the best hotel experiences we've had anywhere. The breakfast service is exceptional. The evening entertainment for kids is excellent and we planned our evenings around it by day three.

The honest caveats: the pool closes at 7pm and they enforce it, which was a genuine problem during a July heatwave when it was still extremely hot at closing time and guests were being ushered out against their will. The kids' club is underwhelming for the price — mostly coloring sheets and toys indoors. And the location is remote enough that you need a car for everything outside the property.

Worth it overall? Yes — for the right kind of family trip. Read on for the full picture.

PROS:

  • Beautifully designed to look like an ancient Puglian village.

  • Festa del Borgo parties filling every nook and cranny of the squares with dancing and entertainment

  • Lots of options for dining from Michelin-starred to more casual pizzerias by the pool

  • Breakfast, which is included, especially the fantastic service

  • Evening entertainment options for kids

CONS:

  • The location is somewhat remote. You need a car to go to any of the surrounding towns. It’s a long walk to the beach, but there are shuttles to take you there.

  • The service was hit or miss. Breakfast was always fantastic, but it was at times difficult to order things at the pool.

  • The pool closes at 7pm, as in they kick you out of the pool. We were there in a heatwave in July, so this really was a problem as it was still extremely hot at 7pm. There was always many guests still wanting to use the pool when we were ushered off at closing time.

Layout

Borgo Egnazia is divided into two distinct sections. La Corte — the adult-facing area — contains the main pools, lobby, spa, and gym. Il Borgo is the family section, clustered around the family pool, kids' club, and La Frasca restaurant. In July, Il Borgo was full of families from across Europe and beyond. The entire property is designed as an interconnected village — whitewashed stone alleys, archways, unexpected courtyards — and walking between sections genuinely feels like moving through an ancient Puglian town rather than a resort.

Rooms

We rented three adjacent rooms, which worked well for nine people. Each had a king bed with a pull-out sofa for kids, a quiet private patio, and an included minibar — though the minibar was restocked sporadically rather than daily, which was a minor annoyance at a hotel at this price point. The rooms aren't large but are beautifully decorated and comfortable. The patios were visited daily by a rotating cast of friendly cats, which became a genuine highlight for the children.

Kids' Activities

Kids' club — Available for a fee, and honestly our kids didn't love it. The setup during our visit was mostly indoor toys and coloring sheets, which underdelivered relative to what you'd expect from a resort of this caliber. The one exception was a pie-making session — they enjoyed making it and, more reliably, eating it. Honest assessment: 7/10, and only because everything else about the property is excellent.

Playground — Adjacent to the family pool and used constantly by our kids. Solid equipment, well-positioned, no complaints.

The farm — A small working farm on property with donkeys, goats, and chickens. A genuine hit with children of all ages and a detail that sets Borgo apart from other luxury resorts. Our kids spent real time here daily.

Evening entertainment — By far the best kids' activity on property, and the one we'd highlight most to families considering this hotel. Magic shows and a full mini circus ran every evening, performed by what appeared to be a dedicated troupe of genuinely talented performers. The kids were transfixed — our daughter Chopina in particular. By day three we were scheduling our evenings around the show times.

Beaches

Two beaches, both accessible by shuttle — which is worth knowing upfront because the beach is not walkable from the main property.

Beach 1 (closer) — Rocky shoreline with a ladder into the water and Cala Masciola restaurant on site for full sit-down lunch or lighter bites at your beach chair. Despite reading beforehand that this wasn't a good beach for kids, our children had no complaints — the water was clear and the rocky entry was manageable. Golf cart shuttle runs every 20 minutes.

Beach 2 (farther) — Has a proper sand beach and arrives via a vintage Fiat shuttle, which is a small logistical detail that children enjoy more than they probably should. More limited food and drink menu than Beach 1, but sand toys are available. Worth visiting for the setting and the shuttle experience alone.

Both beaches are worth trying. They're different enough to justify the trip to each.

Dining

Because of the remote location, we ate most meals on property. The full guide to restaurants in the wider Puglia region is in our Best Restaurants in Puglia guide — below covers the on-property options specifically.

La Frasca — Our favorite on-property restaurant and genuinely one of the best breakfasts we've had at any hotel. Every morning the server brought plates of Puglian specialties to try alongside the full buffet and made-to-order hot dishes. The service at breakfast was the most consistently excellent part of the entire stay. Dinner at La Frasca was equally good — honest, homestyle Italian cooking that delivered every time.

The poolside pizzeria — Our second favorite on-property option. Relaxed atmosphere by the family pool, inventive pizzas, exactly the right vibe for a casual lunch or early dinner with kids. Don't skip it.

Cala Masciola — At the first beach, with a beautiful setting particularly at sunset. We ordered the salt-encrusted local fish for dinner, which was fresh and excellent. Lunch here is livelier with the beach club energy; dinner is quieter and more formal. Both are worth trying.

Concierge note: Every guest is assigned a personal concierge via WhatsApp. We had Viviana, who was warm, responsive, and particularly useful for dinner reservations and recommendations. Use this service — it makes the dining logistics significantly easier.

La Festa del Borgo

We arrived on an evening when La Festa del Borgo was running and walked straight into it, which is the ideal introduction to the hotel. The party spills through the entire property — every alley, square, and open courtyard filled with food stalls serving different Puglian specialties alongside entertainment that included magic performers wandering through the crowd, fire breathers, and a full horse show. Music and dancing throughout. It genuinely felt like being invited to a spectacular Puglian wedding.

This is the single most distinctive thing Borgo Egnazia offers and the one thing we'd tell families to plan their stay around. Check the schedule when booking and make sure at least one Festa date falls within your stay. It runs multiple evenings through summer.

Spa, Gym & Padel

We tried three spa treatments — massages and facials — and none were particularly memorable. Fine but not the reason to come. The indoor pool adjacent to the spa is beautiful and worth a look.

The gym was used several times and had everything needed for a proper workout. The real discovery was padel — we played for the first time on the excellent courts here and found it immediately addicting. If you haven't tried it and there's court time available, go.

What to Know Before You Book

Pool hours: The pool closes at 7pm and is enforced. During our July stay in a heatwave, this was a real problem — it was still extremely hot at 7pm and guests were being ushered out while visibly wanting to stay. If you're going in peak summer, factor this in. It's the most significant practical complaint we have about the property.

Location: Remote by design — which preserves the tranquility of the property but means you need a car for everything outside it. The surrounding towns and beaches are worth exploring, but none are walkable. Budget for a rental car.

Service consistency: Breakfast service was outstanding every single morning. Pool service was inconsistent — ordering drinks and food at the pool was sometimes difficult and slow. A noticeable gap at a property of this caliber.

Kids' club fee: The kids' club is not included in the room rate. Given the quality of what's on offer, we'd suggest skipping it in favor of the farm, the playground, and the evening entertainment — all of which are either included or incidental costs.

Is Borgo Egnazia Worth It for Families?

Yes — with the right expectations. The design, the Festa del Borgo, the evening entertainment, the breakfast service, the beaches, and the farm make it one of the best family resorts in Italy. The pool hours and inconsistent pool service are real frustrations at this price point, and the kids' club underdelivers. But the overall experience — particularly La Festa del Borgo and the evening shows — delivered memories that our children talked about for the rest of the trip. For a multi-generational family trip to Puglia, it's the right base.
