The verdict: The Mandarin Oriental Ritz is the best luxury base in Madrid for families who want quiet elegance over nightlife proximity. Our two-bedroom family suite gave us real room to spread out with two kids, the breakfast is one of the best hotel buffets we've had in Europe, and the location steps from the Prado and Retiro Park is a highlight rather than a compromise. The indoor spa pool runs chilly and the immediate neighborhood is sedate after dark, but for a museums-and-parks Madrid trip with children, we'd book it again without hesitation. The cons. The indoor pool runs chilly, so don't plan an afternoon of lounging. The neighborhood is quiet after dark, which we loved with kids but nightlife-first travelers won't. And you're paying true grande dame rates for all of it.
The Hotel
The Ritz has anchored Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art since 1910, when King Alfonso XIII commissioned it to bring the European grand hotel standard to the Spanish capital. Mandarin Oriental's top-to-bottom restoration returned it to genuine world-class form. It still feels like the Ritz. It just works like a modern five-star now.
The Suite
We booked a two-bedroom family suite, and with two kids it was the right call. Everyone had space. The kids had their own room, we had ours, and nobody was tiptoeing around a sleeping child at 9pm. If your family has outgrown the rollaway-in-the-corner arrangement, this layout solves it. The suite was quiet, the beds excellent, and housekeeping kept up with the chaos two children generate on vacation. The bathroom was always huge and well appointed.
Eating and Drinking
This is where the Ritz surprised us most. You could stay here for a long weekend and eat well without ever leaving the property, which is not something we say often.
Start outside. El Jardín del Ritz, the garden patio restaurant, was the standout of our stay. Dining outdoors in the middle of Madrid, surrounded by the hotel's greenery instead of traffic, is the kind of thing that makes a city trip feel like a resort stay. Go for a long lunch. It's also the easiest on-property meal with kids, since nobody minds a little wandering in a garden.
Then there's Pictura, the cocktail bar, which is genuinely beautiful. The room is lined with portraits, the lighting is perfect, and by early evening it fills up fast with a pre-dinner crowd of guests and well-dressed Madrileños. Get there on the early side if you want a good seat. Even if you're dining elsewhere, one drink at Pictura should be on your Madrid list. It was busy in a good way the night we went.
The breakfast buffet deserves its own paragraph. It's generous, beautifully executed, and with kids it was the easiest and best meal of our day, every day. If your rate includes breakfast, that's a real perk, not filler.
The rest of the lineup runs deep. Quique Dacosta oversees all the dining, including Deessa, his two-Michelin-star flagship, and Palm Court, which sits under the hotel's restored glass dome. There's also an intimate Champagne Bar. We didn't do the full Deessa tasting on this trip (two kids, remember), but it's the culinary headline of the hotel and a reason serious food travelers book here.
The Spa and Pool
The spa is lovely, calm, and well run, with an attractive indoor pool. One honest note: the water runs cool. It's fine for a quick swim, but don't book expecting to lounge in the pool all afternoon. This is a city spa pool, not a resort pool, and it's better to know that going in.
The Location
The hotel sits beside the Prado, across from the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and a short walk from Retiro Park. For our kind of Madrid trip, museums in the morning and the park in the afternoon, it's about as good as it gets. The trade-off is real, though. This corner of Madrid is quiet and elegant, not lively. If you want tapas crawls and nightlife outside your door, you'll be taking taxis. We considered the calm a feature, especially with kids, but know which trip you're planning.
