Montage Los Cabos Review (2026): The Best Beach in Cabo?

montage los cabos pool and beach area

There's a specific problem with Cabo that nobody warns you about until you're standing on the sand watching the surf hammer the shore: most of its beaches aren't swimmable. The Pacific-side breaks are dramatic and dangerous, and the Sea of Cortez stretches that are calm enough to wade into are rare and fiercely fought over by the resorts lucky enough to sit on them.

Montage Los Cabos sits on one of the best swimmable beaches in Los Cabos. The water at Santa Maria Bay is calm and shallow — and after a June stay, I can tell you the beach alone nearly justifies the price. But it's the service that made us want to come back before we'd even left.

The Setting

Montage spans 39 acres along the azure waters of Santa Maria Bay, set where the Sea of Cortez meets the Baja desert. It's roughly a 20-minute drive to Cabo San Lucas and about 17 miles from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). The resort runs private airport transfers, though they aren't cheap — worth arranging in advance through the concierge regardless.

What sets the property apart immediately is how unspoiled the land around it feels. There's essentially nothing within walking distance, which sounds like a drawback until you realize it's the entire point. You're not here to wander into town — and if you do want to explore, there are plenty of great day trips from Cabo within easy reach. You're here to disappear onto one of the calmest, clearest beaches in the region.

The Beach

This is the headline, and it earns its 10. Santa Maria Bay offers direct walk-in access to the finest swimming, diving, and snorkeling in the area. In June the water was bath-warm and glassy in the mornings, and we snorkeled straight off the sand without a boat or a tour. The bay holds Blue Flag certification, which it has maintained for six consecutive years — a meaningful marker of water quality and environmental standards.

Watersports and beginner instruction sessions are complimentary, so the kids spent two mornings paddleboarding without us reaching for a wallet. That kind of thing adds up at a property in this price tier.

The Room

We stayed in an ocean-view room, and the view did exactly what you book a room like this for: the bay filled the windows from the moment we woke up. Guestrooms here start at a generous 895 square feet, each opening to a private terrace with a daybed and lounge area, with indoor and outdoor showers, a freestanding tub, and dual vanities inside. The design leans into creamy stone, indigenous hardwoods, and a modern minimalist sensibility that blends into the desert edge of the bay — restrained, tactile, and not at all the gaudy resort aesthetic Cabo sometimes traffics in.

Falling asleep to the sound of the surf with the terrace doors open was the kind of detail that's hard to manufacture. Here it's just the default.

The Service

If the beach is why you book, the service is why you return. From check-in onward, the staff operated at a level that felt genuinely anticipatory rather than scripted — remembering names, remembering drink orders, quietly solving small problems before we'd finished noticing them. Poolside and beachside service was attentive without hovering, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds.

This is the single hardest thing for a resort to fake, and Montage doesn't have to. It's the reason the overall score lands where it does.

Dining

The resort spreads its dining across multiple venues built around the region's abundant seafood and fresh local ingredients. Marea, overlooking Santa Maria Bay, has some of the best window seats on the property — arguably the peninsula — and breakfast there sets an almost unfairly high bar. Mezcal delivers modern Mexican with a serious spirits program and vibrant interiors. The food is excellent across the board; it falls a hair short of a perfect 10 only because, as with most Cabo resorts, a few of the best meals of any trip will still be found off-property.

The Spa & Pools

Spa Montage is enormous — around 40,000 square feet, with a dozen treatment rooms, a salon, and a semi-Olympic pool — effectively a resort within the resort. On the pool side, you can choose between the main pool with cabanas, a family upper pool, and an adults-only infinity pool, which makes it easy for families and couples to coexist without compromise.

Who It's For

Montage Los Cabos is for travelers who want Cabo's best beach without sacrificing polish, and for families who need a resort that works as well for kids as it does for a quiet adults-only swim. The atmosphere is calm and polished, and it works particularly well for families — one of the reasons it ranks among our best luxury family resorts in Mexico — with extremely spacious rooms and residences, many with sweeping ocean views. If your priority is nonstop nightlife and walkable town energy, you'll want to be closer to Cabo San Lucas — but you'll give up the beach to get it. If you're weighing it against the other heavyweight on the Corridor, our One&Only Palmilla review breaks down how the two compare. For us, the trade was never close.

The Verdict

9/10. The best swimmable beach in Cabo, service that operates a tier above its peers, and rooms that turn an ocean view into the centerpiece of the entire stay. It's expensive, and worth it.
