The Best Hotels in Isla Holbox (2026)

The short answer: Ser Casasandra is the best hotel in Isla Holbox for most travelers. It's the island's original luxury stay, it sits right on the beach near town, and its restaurant is one of the best on the island. Nômade Temple Holbox is the pick for couples who want design and wellness (it's adults-only). Mystique Holbox is the most polished full-service option and the only one where you can use Marriott points. Families should look at Casa Las Tortugas or Villas Flamingos. Expect roughly $250 to $500 a night at the top properties in high season, and book four to six months out for anything from December through March.

Holbox is the Yucatán island we keep going back to. There are no cars, the streets are sand, and everyone on the island stops to watch the sunset. It's also a place where the hotel you pick really shapes the trip. A few blocks can mean the difference between golf-cart traffic and total silence, and some beaches here are wide and glassy while others get buried in seaweed.

Every hotel pick on The Boujist is independent. We pay for our own travel, and no property has ever comped a stay or paid for placement. If you're coming with kids, read our full guide to Isla Holbox with kids alongside this one.

Where to Stay in Holbox: East vs. West

Holbox town sits in the middle of a long, skinny island. Head east from town and you reach Punta Mosquito, where the sandbar stretches out into water so shallow you can wade for what feels like miles. Head west and you get Punta Cocos, quieter and famous for bioluminescence on dark nights.

We stayed on the west side on our last trip and ended up walking or taking a golf-cart taxi east most days. The beaches toward Punta Mosquito are wider and closer to the action, so that's where we'd book next time. The hotels below are mostly on the town beach or east of it, with a couple of exceptions noted.

Ser Casasandra

If you only book one hotel in Holbox, make it this one. It's widely considered the original luxury resort on the island, and it still feels like nowhere else. Cuban-born writer and artist Sandra Pérez turned her own home into a small beach hotel with 17 rooms and one luxury villa, spread across a few low buildings facing the sunset. Think hammocks on the balconies, bougainvillea everywhere, and candles lit after dark.

The food is a big part of the draw. The beachfront restaurant, Ser Esencia, serves fresh fish with Cuban and Mexican flavors, including lobster tamales and mango ceviche. Even if you stay elsewhere, book a dinner here. It's on our list of the best restaurants in Holbox for a reason.

A couple of honest caveats. Seaweed occasionally piles up on the adjacent beach, so it's worth checking conditions before you book, and while kids are welcome, the low-key style suits adults best. That said, there's a two-bedroom ground-floor villa with a bathroom in each room that works well for a family. Rates have hovered around $400 a night and include breakfast, sunrise yoga, and bikes to borrow.

Best for: Couples, first-timers, anyone who wants Holbox at its most soulful.

Nômade Temple Holbox

This is the most photographed hotel on the island, and it earns it. There are 30 rooms spread across three levels, from canvas-walled Moon Temple rooms at ground level up to treehouses perched seven meters above the jungle. The treehouses each have a queen bed facing the water, an indoor-outdoor shower, and a rooftop terrace with 360-degree views.

The whole place leans into wellness. Yoga, breathwork, meditation, and Watsu water therapy are all on offer, and the restaurant serves Nikkei-style food at low tables on floor cushions. It's also in the MICHELIN Guide's hotel selection.

Know what you're signing up for, though. The treehouses are small and sit up a spiral staircase, and recent guests note the road to the hotel isn't lit at night. It's adults-only, so this one's for couples.

Best for: Honeymoons, design lovers, wellness-focused trips.

Mystique Holbox

Mystique is the most "hotel" of the Holbox hotels, and sometimes that's exactly what you want. It's part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, so you can earn and burn Bonvoy points on a car-free island, which is a rare combo. It sits on a private stretch of beach with two restaurants, two bars, and spa services.

The rooms are all suites. Junior suites run around 366 to 463 square feet and sleep four, and there are swim-out suites plus an 840-square-foot presidential ocean-front suite. Holbox Beach is a two-minute walk and the main square about ten. Two kids up to age six stay free using existing beds, which makes it one of the easier luxury picks for young families. It's also one of the better values on this list, with recent rates starting in the mid-$200s.

Best for: Marriott loyalists, families with little kids, anyone who wants reliable service.

Casa Las Tortugas

Casa Las Tortugas has one of the best beaches on the island and a great location right on it. It's a petite beach hotel and spa, and its beach club, Mandarina, was one of our two favorite places to spend a day on Holbox. You don't have to stay here to use it, which tells you how good it is.

The vibe is barefoot and boho, and the spa is a real one. It's within easy walking distance of town and close to Ser Casasandra, so you're in the heart of the good stretch of beach. It works for couples and families equally well.

Best for: Beach-first travelers, families who want to walk everywhere.

Las Nubes de Holbox

If you want to be as close to Punta Mosquito as possible, this is your hotel. Las Nubes sits at the far east end of the island, which means quieter nights and easy access to the sandbar at low tide. It gets you close to the action while still feeling like your own private slice of paradise.

The beach here is the main event. Day visitors pay around 1,200 pesos for a two-chair beach package, so staying overnight means you get it without the crowds.

Best for: Beach lovers, couples who want quiet.

Villas Flamingos

This is the one families ask us about most. Villas Flamingos is very close to Punta Mosquito, which is the best beach on the island for kids. The water stays shallow and calm for ages, so little ones can wade and splash safely. The trade-off is that there isn't much beach directly in front of the hotel itself. You'll walk a few minutes to the good stuff.

The rooms overlook the sea and feel relaxed rather than fancy. It's a solid, well-reviewed choice when you want space and easy beach days more than design-magazine polish.

Best for: Families with kids of any age.

AWA Hotel Boutique

AWA is a strong pick if you want a pool, a beachfront room, and a rooftop for sunset. It sits right on the beach a few steps from Playa Holbox and about 1.3 km from Punta Cocos, with an outdoor pool and balconies on every room. Guests rave about the rooftop sunsets and the spacious rooms. Because it leans toward the west side, it's a good base if you want easier access to Punta Cocos and the bioluminescence.

Best for: Couples, sunset chasers, a pool-plus-beach setup.

Punta Caliza

Punta Caliza is the design pick for travelers who'd rather not go full treehouse. A group of award-winning young architects designed it using traditional Mayan building techniques, with red cedar bark and lime creating a gorgeous stucco finish. The highlight is a water-filled courtyard at the center of the property. It's adults-oriented and has a pool and a private beach area.

Best for: Couples who care about architecture.

Best Time to Visit Holbox

Holbox is at its best from November through March. The weather is dry, the water is calm, and the heat is manageable. That's also high season, so rates climb and the small hotels sell out. For Christmas, New Year's, and Semana Santa, book four to six months ahead and expect the highest rates of the year.

Summer has a second peak for a different reason. Whale sharks gather off Holbox roughly June through September, and swimming with them is one of the best wildlife experiences in Mexico. It's hot and humid then, and it overlaps with hurricane season, but many people think it's worth it. Plan around the moon if you want bioluminescence, since it shows up best on the darkest nights.

How to Choose a Hotel in Holbox

Start with who's coming. Couples have the most choice, and Nômade, Punta Caliza, and Ser Casasandra are all built for two. Families should look at Mystique, Casa Las Tortugas, or Villas Flamingos, where kids are genuinely welcome and the beach is close.

Next, think about location. The east side toward Punta Mosquito has the best beaches for swimming and wading. Town-beach hotels put restaurants and sunset bars on your doorstep. The west side toward Punta Cocos is quieter and better for bioluminescence, but you'll spend more time getting around. Rent a golf cart for a day either way. It's the most fun you'll have getting from A to B.

Finally, set your budget. Mystique and AWA tend to be the most accessible of the high-end picks. Ser Casasandra and Nômade sit at the top. Rates on Holbox swing a lot by season, so compare dates before you commit. Once you've booked, plan your meals with our guide to the best restaurants in Isla Holbox.

Getting to Holbox

Fly into Cancún, then drive about two hours to the port town of Chiquilá. From there it's a quick 15-minute ferry, with two companies alternating departures. We'd recommend spending your first night in Cancún so you're not doing the whole journey after a long flight. When you step off the ferry, golf-cart taxis are waiting to take you to your hotel.

If Holbox is part of a bigger Yucatán trip, it pairs well with a few nights in Tulum. Our picks for the best hotels in Tulum cover both the beach and the jungle. For more stays like these across the country, see the best boutique hotels in Mexico.
