Best Summer Family Vacation Spots in Colorado (2026): A Local's Guide
Paddleboarding Northstar Nature Preserve in Aspen
Summer in Colorado is genuinely as good as advertised. Green peaks, wildflowers, mountain lakes, cool temperatures when the rest of the country is melting, and enough to do that a week goes by without exhausting the options. We live here. These are our five picks for a fail-proof Colorado summer vacation with kids.
Telluride
The difficulty of getting to Telluride — six hours from Denver by car, or a connection through Montrose Regional Airport — is precisely what has kept it from being overrun. Set in a stunning box canyon with a waterfall that appears to crash directly into town, this historic mining town turned mountain destination has everything in summer that it has in winter, with a fraction of the crowds.
Stay:Madeline Hotel & Residences — Located in Mountain Village, connected to historic downtown Telluride by the free gondola. Beautiful pool, incredible mountain views, and well suited for families. The gondola ride into town is itself a memorable activity for children.
Eat: Coffee at the Coffee Cowboy. Breakfast and picnic sandwiches at Butcher and Baker — get the sandwiches and take them on a hike. Brown Dog Pizza for a casual family dinner. Allred's at the top of the gondola for fine dining with some of the most dramatic views in Colorado.
Do: Hike Bridal Veil Falls — Colorado's largest waterfall, and genuinely impressive. We also took a horseback ride through the surrounding San Juan Mountains with a guide who took us fly-fishing on a high-alpine stream. One of the better outdoor experiences we've had in Colorado with kids.
Aspen
We may be biased — we live here — but Aspen in summer is one of the best places in Colorado for families and genuinely competes with any mountain destination in the country. The Saturday Farmers Market on the mall is a legitimate institution. Paddleboarding the headwaters of the Colorado River at Northstar Nature Preserve is one of the most scenic paddles in the state. Live music, rodeos, hiking, and bike trails fill the rest of the time.

Kids cooling off in Boulder Creek
Dude Ranch
The best way to give children a genuinely different Colorado experience is a week at a dude ranch. Horseback riding, river fishing, campfires, wide open space — the kind of trip that produces memories that last considerably longer than a resort pool week.
C Lazy U Ranch — Near Granby, about two hours from Denver. One of the most established family dude ranches in Colorado with a devoted following — families who come back year after year are the norm rather than the exception. Full ranch activity programming, genuine Western experience.
The Ranch at Emerald Valley — Operated by the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. The most luxurious version of the dude ranch experience — all the ranch activities alongside Broadmoor-level amenities. The right choice if you want the cowboy experience without entirely sacrificing comfort.
Wildflowers near Aspen
Boulder
Boulder is the most accessible Colorado mountain town from Denver — about 45 minutes — and punches well above its size for family activities. Pearl Street is excellent for shopping and people-watching. The Saturday Farmers Market is one of the better in the state. Floating Boulder Creek on a tube is a free and genuinely fun summer afternoon for kids of all ages. Mt. Sanitas is an accessible hike that locals do regularly and rewards with good views without requiring serious fitness.
Stay:St. Julien Hotel and Spa — Centrally located within walking distance of Pearl Street and everything Boulder has to offer. Good pool, luxurious rooms, the most practical upscale base in town.
Eat: Pizzeria Locale for authentic Neapolitan pizza in a setting that works well for families. If you have a night without the kids, Frasca Food and Wine next door — the same ownership, a prix fixe menu consistently ranked among the best in Colorado.
Glamping
For families who want the outdoor Colorado experience without the camping logistics — tents, sleeping bags, cooking over a fire — glamping hits the right compromise. Two options at very different price points:
Dunton River Camp — Set in one of the most stunning locations in Colorado near Dolores, all-inclusive with meals and most activities included. Each tent is equipped with full five-star hotel amenities plus two mountain bikes. The most luxurious glamping in the state and genuinely worth it if budget allows.
Collective Retreats Vail — More accessible in both price and location. Beautiful tents in an incredible mountain setting outside Vail. A strong option for families who want the glamping experience closer to Denver and at a more approachable price point.
When to Go
June through August is peak Colorado summer. July and August are the warmest and most active months — all activities, restaurants, and events are running at full capacity. June has the best wildflower blooms, particularly around Aspen and Telluride. Early September extends the season with fewer crowds and still-warm days, and the fall color starts appearing by mid-September which is its own reason to come.
Practical Notes
Altitude: Colorado's mountain towns sit between 6,000 and 9,000 feet above sea level. Drink significantly more water than usual, go easy on alcohol for the first day or two, and don't be surprised if children (and adults) are more tired than expected on arrival. It adjusts within 24-48 hours.
Driving: Telluride and Dunton require serious mountain driving — narrow roads, significant elevation changes. If you're not comfortable on mountain roads, fly into Montrose for Telluride. Denver is the most convenient hub for Boulder, Vail, and the Front Range destinations.
Weather: Colorado mountain afternoons frequently bring thunderstorms in July and August. Plan outdoor activities for mornings and build afternoon flexibility into the schedule.
