Best Hotels in Carmel (2026): Where to Stay
The short answer
The best hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea is L'Auberge Carmel, a 20-room Relais & Châteaux inn in the village with the Michelin-starred Aubergine downstairs, from around $692. Its new sister property, the Carmel Beach Hotel, is the most exciting opening in years and has the only hotel spa in the village. For value with real character, La Playa Hotel and the Cypress Inn both sit under $400 much of the year. Inland in Carmel Valley, Bernardus Lodge & Spa is the better choice when the coast is fogged in. Budget $300 to $500 for very good and $700 to $1,200 for the top tier.
Where to stay in Carmel
Carmel is four places, and choosing between them is most of the decision.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is the village itself, one square mile of galleries, tasting rooms, storybook cottages and a white-sand beach at the bottom of Ocean Avenue. Under a thousand hotel rooms exist inside it, which is why rates hold up. Stay here if you want to park once and walk everywhere.
Carmel Highlands is four miles south on Highway 1, perched above the water where the coast starts turning into Big Sur. The views are better and you will drive to dinner.
Carmel Valley is fifteen minutes inland, and it is the local's trick: when the village is grey and fifty-eight degrees in July, the valley is sunny and seventy. It is also where the resorts with pools and space are.
Pebble Beach sits just north, a separate world of golf and 17-Mile Drive, close enough to use Carmel as your restaurant town.
L'Auberge Carmel
Twenty rooms around a courtyard in the middle of the village, with Relais & Châteaux membership and the kind of service that remembers your coffee order on day two. Aubergine is the restaurant and it holds a Michelin star, backed by a cellar running to several thousand bottles.
The real argument for it is location. You are a few minutes' walk from the galleries, the tasting rooms and the beach path, which means you can drink wine at dinner and walk home. Rates usually open around $692 and climb past $900 in high season. It is the best small hotel in Carmel and priced accordingly.
Carmel Beach Hotel
The newest reason to rethink Carmel. Built in the former Colonial Terrace space as a sister property to L'Auberge under the Mirabel group, it has 26 guest rooms plus seven cottages, many with private decks and ocean views, roughly 100 steps from Carmel Beach.
Two details set it apart. The food is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Justin Cogley, and it houses Spa Adeline, which is the only hotel spa inside Carmel-by-the-Sea. Complimentary breakfast baskets arrive at the room. If you want the village experience with a spa and a beach position, this is the answer.
La Playa Hotel
The grand dame, built in 1905 as an artist's gift to his wife and restored across all 75 rooms, with gardens, courtyards and a terrace swimming pool, which is rare in the village. Bud's is the bar and the champagne breakfast on the terrace is the thing guests write home about. Rates start around $349 and run to $770 depending on season and view. Pound for pound it is the best-value serious hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and it is a short walk down to the beach.
Cypress Inn
A Carmel landmark since 1929 and co-owned for decades by Doris Day, which is why it is the most genuinely dog-friendly hotel in a town that is already unusually good about dogs. Mediterranean tilework, marble bathrooms, antiques, and Terry's Lounge downstairs for live music and cocktails with other people's spaniels underfoot.
Rates often start around $324. Book it if you are bringing a dog, or if you want old Carmel rather than new Carmel.
Carriage House Inn
Thirteen rooms on Junipero between 7th and 8th, one block off the centre but on a quiet side street, which is the ideal Carmel position. French-country style, fireplaces in the rooms, breakfast delivered to your door and a nightly wine hour. Rates run roughly $381 to $564. This is the most romantic small inn in the village that is not L'Auberge.
Le Petit Pali
Palisociety opened two properties here, one on 8th Avenue and one on Ocean Avenue, sharing 58 rooms between them. Expect a daily continental champagne breakfast with pastries from Rise + Roam, house bicycles and Diptyque in the bathrooms. It is the most design-driven stay in the village and skews younger than everything around it. From around $381, though the Ocean Avenue rooms climb toward $700.

Stilwell Hotel
The former Carmel Lodge, reopened in May 2024 after a three-year rebuild, with around 42 rooms in the heart of downtown. Courtyards with fire pits and fountains, a wood-fired pizza oven, a cafe, complimentary breakfast, free parking, and dogs welcome. Free parking matters more here than it sounds, because Carmel parking is genuinely painful. Rates run around $400 to $530.

Tickle Pink Inn
Four miles south in Carmel Highlands, cantilevered above the ocean with private balconies over the water and a rate that undercuts anything with a comparable view. There is no restaurant and no scene. You come for the balcony and the sound of it. Good staging post if you are driving Big Sur the next morning.
Bernardus Lodge & Spa
The best hotel in Carmel Valley and the fog insurance policy. Seventy-three rooms and suites, all with fireplaces and two-person soaking tubs, set among vineyards and gardens, with a proper spa and the Lucia restaurant on site. Rates open around $1,200. If you are visiting in June or July and the forecast is grey, book here rather than the village and drive in for dinner.
Carmel Valley Ranch
The family answer in the same valley, spread over 500 acres with pools, trails, a kids' club, an apiary and enough room for children to disappear for an afternoon. It is far more forgiving with kids than the village inns, most of which are small and quiet by design. Rates run roughly $488 to $700.

Best time to visit, and when to book
September and October are Carmel's best months by a distance. The fog lifts, the crowds thin after Labor Day, and the light on the cypress trees is why people photograph this coast. Rates peak accordingly, so book eight to twelve weeks out.
June and July catch people out. The marine layer can sit over the village until mid-afternoon while Carmel Valley is sunny and ten degrees warmer. If you are travelling early summer, either stay inland or accept grey mornings.
January through March is the value window. Village hotels drop noticeably, whale watching is at its best, and the village is quiet in a way that suits it. Two dates to avoid unless you are there for them: the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and Car Week in August, both of which empty the Peninsula of rooms and double what is left.

Carmel pairs naturally with the coast south of it, and with Santa Barbara if you are driving the full route.
