Why the Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya is the stretch of Caribbean coast that runs south from Cancun to Tulum. It's the easiest luxury beach trip from most of the US, with direct flights into Cancun and transfers of under an hour to most of the best resorts. The water is turquoise, the sand is soft and white, and you're never far from cenotes, Mayan ruins or the reef. The luxury scene clusters in a few places. Mayakoba, just north of Playa del Carmen, is a gated resort community laced with mangrove lagoons and home to four hotels. Punta Maroma and the new Kanai development sit a few minutes north of that on some of the best sand on the coast. Further south, smaller hotels like Esencia line quiet coves on the way to Tulum.
We've spent a lot of time on this coast, from Tulum to Isla Holbox, often with our kids. If you're focused on Tulum itself, our separate guide to the best hotels in Tulum covers the beach road in detail. For the rest of the country, start with our best luxury hotels in Mexico.
Maroma, A Belmond Hotel
Maroma is the original Riviera Maya hideaway, and after a full redesign by Tara Bernerd it's better than ever. It sits on 200 acres of jungle with 72 rooms, suites and villas spread along a private stretch of beach that's genuinely world-class. The sand is powdery, the water is calm, and there's room to breathe.
The rooms are full of Mexican craft, from hand-painted Jalisco tiles to woven textiles. There's a Guerlain spa, a restaurant from chef Curtis Stone, and a handful of beachfront suites that open straight onto the sand. Service is warm and unhurried in the classic Belmond way.
Don't come for programming or a buzzy pool scene. Rates have started around $1,095 a night for a deluxe room, putting it at the top of the market. For a beach-first trip, nothing on this coast beats it.
Rosewood Mayakoba
Rosewood is the best all-around resort in the Riviera Maya and our top pick for families. Every suite is huge and comes with its own plunge pool and butler service. Many sit right over the lagoons, with a private dock outside, and you can take a boat through the mangroves to dinner.
The resort has a beautiful stretch of beach, six pools, the excellent Sense spa and access to El Camaleón, the Greg Norman golf course that winds through the whole Mayakoba community. Kids love the boats, the bikes and the space. Adults love the quiet that comes with suites this big.
Rates usually run from about $750 a night in the slower months to $1,400 and up in winter. Look for its frequent free-night offers on longer stays. It's a strong value for what you get.
Chablé Maroma
Chablé Maroma is the most private stay on this list. All 70 villas are tucked into the jungle, and every single one has its own plunge pool. Mornings start with a coffee and pastry basket left outside your door. After that, you may not see another guest until dinner.
Wellness is the focus here. There's a huge spa built around Mayan rituals, yoga, and no golf carts, so you walk everywhere. The food program comes from the team behind one of Mexico City's most acclaimed restaurants, and the beach is long and soft.
The property is spread out, so ask for a villa closer to the beach if walking is an issue. Rates generally run about $1,000 to $1,400 a night with breakfast. It's best for couples, though kids are allowed in the villas.
Etéreo, Auberge Collection
Etéreo is the design pick. It sits in the gated Kanai community just north of Playa del Carmen, with 75 rooms set in low towers above a protected mangrove forest. Raised walkways lead through the trees to a white-sand beach. It holds two Michelin Keys, which puts it among the best hotels in Mexico.
Every guest gets a personal butler, called a guía. There are two pools, the SANA spa with a full bathhouse, a kids club and several restaurants, from Mayan-inspired Itzam to a casual beach bar. Rooms range from studios to three-bedroom penthouses, all with ocean or mangrove views.
It's polished, calm and smaller than the Mayakoba resorts. Book it for a couples trip or a family that wants style over sprawl.
Banyan Tree Mayakoba
Banyan Tree is the best value in Mayakoba, and has most of the same amenities as it’s pricier neighbor, the Rosewood. It's an all-villa resort with 132 villas, and every one has a private pool that's bigger than some hotel pools. The design mixes Mayan and Asian touches, and the spa is one of the best in the region.
The villas are enormous, starting around 2,700 square feet. Some sit along the lagoons, others right on the beach. Guests get bikes to explore the wider Mayakoba community.
Rates have started around $650 a night, which is a lot of private space for the money. It works for couples and families who want a villa feel with full resort service.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Grand Velas is the best luxury all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya. It's big, with more than 500 suites, but the layout splits it into three separate areas so it never feels crowded. Zen sits in the jungle, Ambassador is the family-friendly beachfront section, and Grand Class is an oceanfront area for guests 16 and up.
Suites start at more than 1,100 square feet. The food is a real step above typical all-inclusives, with Cocina de Autor holding a Michelin star. The SE Spa has a Forbes five-star rating, and the kids club is excellent.
Rates are priced per person and include almost everything. Expect well over $1,000 a night for two in high season. Book the Ambassador section with kids, or Grand Class for a couples trip.

Hotel Esencia
Esencia is the best boutique hotel on the coast. It was built as a private estate for an Italian duchess and still feels like a beautiful private house. It sits on a gorgeous, swimmable cove at Xpu-Ha, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Rooms feel personal rather than designed for Instagram. The pace is slow, the service is warm, and the beach is one of the best on the Riviera Maya. It's an easy base for cenotes and the Tulum ruins.
It's priced with the top resorts here. Skip it if you need a kids club or lots of pools. Book it if you want the finest small beach hotel in Mexico.
Fairmont Mayakoba
Fairmont was the first hotel in Mayakoba, and a big renovation has given it a fresh start. It sits on 240 acres of jungle and waterways, and you get around by golf cart, bike or boat. Rooms were redesigned to bring the outdoors in, and many look straight onto the lagoons.
The big draw is flexibility. You can book it as a regular resort or add an optional all-inclusive plan, which reviewers say is far better than standard all-inclusive food. There's a solid kids club and a range of restaurants.
Alila Mayakoba
Alila Mayakoba opened in February 2026 in the former Andaz Mayakoba, after a full renovation. It's Alila's first hotel in Latin America, with 182 rooms, nearly 40 percent of them suites. The resort is split between a lagoon side and a beach side, linked by Mayakoba's waterways.
The focus is wellness, with treatments built around Mayan traditions and the sacred calendar. There are six restaurants, including the returning Casa Amate. Most of the old family features are gone, so it's best for couples.
It's still new, so expect a few opening wrinkles. It's worth a look if you want Mayakoba with a calmer, grown-up feel.
Kimpton Tres Ríos
Kimpton Tres Ríos opened this fall as Kimpton's first-ever all-inclusive resort. It sits inside a 340-acre nature preserve near Playa del Carmen, with jungle trails, mangroves, three freshwater rivers and ten cenotes. You can kayak and snorkel right on property. It's built for families. There are 355 suites, four pools, a kids club for ages 4 to 12 and a big spa with a temazcal. Pets stay free.
It's brand new, so service and dining are still settling in. We'll update this once it has a track record. For now, it's the most interesting new family option on the coast.

What About Tulum?
Tulum is technically part of the Riviera Maya, but it's a different trip. Instead of big resorts, you get small, design-forward hotels along a beach road, plus some of the best restaurants in Mexico. Our best hotels in Tulum guide covers it all, and we stayed at La Zebra and loved it. Bringing kids? Read our Tulum with kids guide. Then plan your meals with our picks for the best restaurants in Tulum and the best beach clubs in Tulum.
Want somewhere quieter? Isla Holbox, a few hours north, is one of our favorite places in Mexico. See our guide to the best hotels on Isla Holbox.
Coming Soon to the Riviera Maya
The biggest opening is Park Hyatt Riviera Maya, the brand's first all-inclusive. It's set to open January 8, 2027, between Cancun and Puerto Morelos, with 148 ocean-view rooms and suites, some with private pools, and a fully à la carte dining program.
Also on the way are Finest Riviera Cancún, a big family all-inclusive near Puerto Morelos due in early 2027, and a 980-room Marriott all-inclusive planned for 2027. We'll add the best of them once they open and we can stay.
Best Time to Visit and Book the Riviera Maya
The best time to visit the Riviera Maya is November through April. It's dry, sunny and warm, with calm, clear water. December through March is peak season, so rates are highest then.
Sargassum seaweed is the big wildcard. It tends to wash up from spring through late summer, and some years are much worse than others. Resorts rake their beaches daily, but if a perfect beach is the point of the trip, winter is the safest bet.
May and early November are the sweet spots for value. June through October brings heat, humidity and storms, with September and October the peak of hurricane season. Rates drop sharply then, and many resorts run free-night offers.
Book early for Christmas, New Year's, Presidents' Day week, spring break and Semana Santa. The villa resorts like Chablé and Banyan Tree, and small hotels like Esencia, sell out first. Aim for six months ahead for those dates.
How to Choose the Right Riviera Maya Hotel
Start with the beach. If the sand and water matter most, book Maroma or Esencia. Both have some of the best beaches in Mexico.
Traveling with kids? Rosewood Mayakoba is the best all-around pick. Grand Velas is the move if you want everything included, and the Fairmont gets you into Mayakoba for less.
For couples, it's about how much privacy you want. Chablé Maroma and Banyan Tree give you your own pool and total seclusion. Etéreo is the stylish, design-forward pick. Grand Velas' Grand Class works if you'd rather not think about the bill.
Then think about location. Mayakoba and Kanai put you about 40 minutes from Cancun airport and close to Playa del Carmen. Esencia is closer to Tulum and the cenotes. If you can't decide, Rosewood Mayakoba is the safest booking on the coast.
