PROS

  • Walkable to tons of amazing restaurants. Still lively but not wild and crazy like some of the areas of beach further north.

  • Set right on one of the best stretches of beach with the crystal-clear turquoise ocean steps from your hotel room.

CONS

  • We visited during the peak season and the staff was friendly, if not slightly overwhelmed. Lots of forgotten food and drink orders, etc.

    The Bottom Line

If you want a stylish, beachfront boutique hotel in Tulum that actually delivers on location, vibe, and food, La Zebra is still one of the safest bets. It’s not trying to be the most exclusive or the most design-forward hotel in Tulum—but that’s exactly why it works. You get a prime stretch of beach, a lively but not chaotic atmosphere, and a setup that’s surprisingly easy with kids.

For most people, it hits the sweet spot between:

    • overly expensive design hotels

    • and underwhelming mid-range options

Location (This Is Why You Book It)

La Zebra sits directly on Tulum Beach Road, which is exactly where you want to be. You’re within walking (or quick bike) distance to:

    • Casa Banana

    • Arca

    • Hartwood

    • Beach clubs like Gitano

This matters more in Tulum than almost anywhere else—because once traffic hits, moving around becomes a project. Compared to staying farther down the beach or inland:

La Zebra gives you immediate access to everything without sacrificing beachfront quality.

    Rooms (Choose Carefully)

Rooms are bright, beachy, and comfortable, but not overly polished.

Think white walls, wood accents, and indoor-outdoor flow. Some have rooftop terraces, plunge pools, direct beach views.

    What to know:

    • Entry-level rooms are fine, but not special

    • The upgrade to oceanfront or rooftop is worth it

If you’re booking this hotel for a trip that matters, don’t cheap out on the room category.

    Beach & Atmosphere

The beach here is one of the biggest advantages.

    • Wide, swimmable (when Tulum conditions cooperate)

    • Comfortable loungers and shaded areas

    • Lively but not chaotic

    Who It’s Best For

    • Couples who want Tulum without the chaos

    • Families who still want beachfront + style

    • First-time Tulum visitors who want an easy, reliable stay

    Who Should Skip It

    • If you want ultra-luxury (look elsewhere)

    • If you want total seclusion

    • If design is your #1 priority

We were fortunate to stay at La Zebra in Tulum over NYE where we had a fabulous stay. While the food, rooms and service were all good, the real highlight of this beachfront hotel is the location. Read the full review below, and our Tulum travel guide here.

Let’s cut to the chase: La Zebra in Tulum? It’s a win for anyone looking for a relaxed beachfront location, even families.

Location: The beachfront location? A+! It’s your ticket to uninterrupted beach days within walking distance of some of the best restaurants in Tulum. This stretch of beach is lively without the craziness that can come with the beachclubs to the north.

Staff: Super friendly and hard-working. There were some service missteps, but they didn’t seem to come from lack of effort. For instance, we were supposed to have coffee delivered to our room every morning, but it only showed up at our selected time on the last morning.

Food: You won't go hungry here. The on-site restaurant serves up fresh and delicious Mexican flavors. The restaurant here made our list for the Best Restaurants in Tulum.

Rooms: Rooms are newly decorated, clean and comfy. All the rooms are steps from the ocean. The sea-view balcony rooms have amazing views of the ocean, as well as king-size beds with a twin trundle bed. Kids are an additional $40/night.

Children: While there’s no kid’s club, kids are very welcomed here. Ours were greeted upon arrival with bags of beach toys. There is also a small playground near the beach and restaurant. Is It Good for Kids? Surprisingly, yes. This is one of the few Tulum beach hotels that:

  • feels welcoming, not just tolerant of kids

  • has enough space to make it manageable

  • keeps things relaxed during the day

It’s not a “kids resort,” but: it’s one of the easiest boutique options in Tulum with a family

Facilities: There is a small rooftop pool and lounge area (with a foosball table) for guests of La Zebra.

Final Verdict

La Zebra isn’t the trendiest hotel in Tulum—and that’s exactly why it works.

It delivers where it matters: location, beach, food and ease

And in a destination where things can feel inconsistent, that reliability is worth a lot. If you’re choosing one boutique beachfront hotel in Tulum that you know will work, this is it.

  • La Zebra vs Other Tulum Hotels

    Vs Nomade / Be Tulum

    • More relaxed, less try-hard

    • Better for families

    • Slightly less design-forward

    Vs Azulik

    • Infinitely more comfortable

    • Actually functional

    • Less of a “scene”

    Vs Casa Malca

    • Smaller, more intimate

    • Less art-driven, more livable

    Bottom line:

La Zebra is the most balanced option on Tulum beach right now
