Winnetu Oceanside Resort Review (2026): Is It Martha's Vineyard's Best Family Hotel?
Winnetu sits on the edge of South Beach in Edgartown — not in town, which is either a pro or a con depending on what you're looking for. The complimentary shuttle runs regularly into Edgartown, which removes the practical inconvenience of being removed from the main village. What the location gives you in return is South Beach directly accessible from the property, dune views, and a quieter pace than you'd have staying in the center of things. For families, that trade-off works well. For couples who want to walk to dinner, it's worth knowing upfront.
We stayed in summer over 4th of July weekend. Here's the honest picture of our stay.

What to Know Before You Book
Location: Not in Edgartown village. The shuttle solves this practically but it's worth setting expectations — you're on South Beach, not on the harbor. For the beach-focused trip, this is ideal. For the town-focused trip, Harbor View Hotel or Charlotte Inn put you closer to the action.
Beach: South Beach is dramatic and beautiful but has genuine Atlantic surf. Not the calmest option for families with toddlers. The pool is the more reliable option for young children.
Value: At 8/10, Winnetu is the best value proposition among the luxury hotels on Martha's Vineyard — particularly for families who use the full kitchen and townhome configuration, which eliminates some of the cost pressure around dining every meal out.
Is Winnetu Worth It for Families?
Yes — it's our pick for the best family hotel on Martha's Vineyard. The combination of South Beach access, the kids' summer camp, the antique fire truck, the Wednesday Lobsterbake, and the townhome configurations for families makes it the most practically well-suited luxury option on the island for traveling with children. The dining is good rather than exceptional, and the location requires the shuttle for evenings in town — both worth knowing and neither a dealbreaker.
Rooms
Winnetu offers hotel suites, private cottages, and multi-bedroom townhomes. The townhomes are the right choice for families — full kitchens, washer-dryer setups, and enough space that everyone isn't on top of each other after a long beach day. The décor is nautical without being heavy-handed about it: light, airy, and comfortable. Many rooms have balconies with dune views and ocean breezes. We had two connecting rooms that worked well for our large family.
Couples and solo travelers will find the suites equally inviting, with cozy sitting areas and understated elegance that highlight the resort’s focus on relaxed luxury.
Dining
The Dunes — The main restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Atlantic. Lobster rolls and oysters at lunch, more refined coastal cooking at dinner. The deck at sunset is genuinely good. Worth a dinner reservation even if the food doesn't quite match the setting.
The Wednesday Lobsterbake — The standout dining experience on property and the one worth planning your stay around if you can time it. A proper New England lobsterbake done well — this is the kind of thing Winnetu does better than anywhere in Edgartown.
Poolside Grill — Casual daytime food by the pool. Exactly what it needs to be and nothing more.
The honest dining note: the best meals on Martha's Vineyard are off-property. See our Martha's Vineyard Travel Guide for the full restaurant breakdown including Larsen's Fish Market in Menemsha and Il Buco al Mare in Edgartown.
Activities & Amenities
This is where Winnetu earns its reputation as the best family hotel on Martha's Vineyard. The activities score of 9/10 is the highest category rating in this review and it's justified.
South Beach — A short walk from the property, vast and open with rolling Atlantic surf. Better for walking and kite flying than calm swimming — the surf is real here. Worth knowing if you have very young children who need calm water; Indian Wells Beach nearby is the more sheltered alternative.
Kids' Summer Camp — The children's program is genuinely well run. Nature walks, beach games, arts and crafts — structured enough that kids have something to do, relaxed enough that it doesn't feel regimented. Gives parents real time to themselves, which is the point.
Antique Fire Truck Rides — A Winnetu signature and one of those details that sounds gimmicky until your children are on it and completely delighted. Worth doing at least once.
Two Heated Pools — Outdoor, heated, good for the shoulder season when South Beach is too cold for extended swimming. The family pool setup works well for kids of all ages.
Tennis & Clinics — Courts on property with clinics available. The instruction is good — worth booking if tennis is your thing.
Sunrise Yoga — On the lawn, instructor was friendly and genuinely engaging rather than performatively zen. Good way to start a morning before the kids wake up.
Complimentary Shuttle — Runs regularly into Edgartown. Removes the parking and driving headache entirely, which on Martha's Vineyard in summer is a meaningful practical advantage.
Atmosphere
Despite its scale, Winnetu never feels crowded. Instead, it exudes the intimacy of a private seaside enclave. Families gather for lawn games, couples sip wine by the fire pits, and everyone seems to pause for the nightly spectacle of the sun dipping into the Atlantic. It’s refined, but never pretentious—a refreshing take on luxury that encourages relaxation and play in equal measure.
The Verdict
Winnetu Oceanside Resort is more than just a place to stay—it’s a destination in itself. With its prime location on South Beach, thoughtful accommodations, and curated experiences, it captures the essence of a Martha’s Vineyard getaway: effortless, elegant, and deeply connected to the sea.
For families, it’s a dream base camp. For couples, it’s a romantic retreat with room to breathe. And for anyone who loves the ocean, it’s a front-row seat to the Vineyard at its most captivating.
