Best Time to Visit Cabo (Month-by-Month Guide)

March is one of the best times to visit Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo Mexico

The short answer: November through May is the best time to visit Cabo. The weather is reliably sunny, temperatures are warm but not oppressive, the water is swimmable, and the desert landscape is at its most beautiful. If you want a more specific answer — the absolute sweet spot is late October through early December and again in late April and May, when you get excellent conditions with meaningfully fewer crowds and lower hotel prices than peak season.

But the longer answer depends on what you’re optimizing for. Weather, prices, crowds, whale watching, fishing, and family travel all have different ideal windows. This guide breaks it all down month by month so you can make the right call for your trip.

Month-by-Month Guide to Cabo

January

Weather: Sunny, 75–80°F (24–27°C) days, cool evenings around 60°F (15°C)

Crowds: Peak — one of the busiest months of the year

Prices: Peak — expect top rates across all hotels

January is one of the most popular months to visit Cabo and it’s easy to see why. The weather is essentially perfect — warm, sunny, and dry, with low humidity and cool evenings that make the desert landscape feel magical. The Sea of Cortez is calm and clear. You won’t be disappointed by the conditions.

The trade-off is price and crowds. Post-New Year’s week is particularly busy, resort rates are at their annual peak, and popular restaurants and beach clubs book out well in advance. If you’re visiting in January, book everything — hotel, restaurants, boat tours — as early as possible.

Best for: Travelers with flexible budgets who want the best possible weather and don’t mind sharing the resort with crowds.

February

Weather: Sunny, 75–80°F (24–27°C), very low humidity

Crowds: Peak — Valentine’s Day drives the highest demand of the year

Prices: Peak, especially around Valentine’s Day

February is virtually identical to January in terms of weather — genuinely excellent. Valentine’s Day week is the single most expensive and crowded week of the Cabo calendar. If you’re planning a romantic trip, Valentine’s Day in Cabo is wonderful but comes at a premium; the week before or after offers the same conditions at better prices.

February also marks the beginning of prime whale watching season — gray whales and humpbacks migrate through the Sea of Cortez from December through April, with February and March being the peak months for sightings.

Best for: Couples and romantic trips. Book well in advance for Valentine’s week or accept premium pricing.

March

Weather: Sunny, 80–85°F (27–29°C), beginning to warm

Crowds: Very high — spring break drives significant traffic

Prices: Very high during spring break weeks, slightly lower at other times

March brings excellent weather — arguably the best of the year in terms of temperature — alongside the spring break surge, which is concentrated in the two or three weeks around US school holidays. The Cabo San Lucas marina area gets particularly busy during spring break. If you’re traveling with young children or want a quieter experience, avoid the peak spring break weeks.

The whale watching continues to be excellent in March, and fishing picks up as water temperatures begin to rise. Late March after spring break is one of the best windows of the year — near-perfect weather, dropping crowds, and prices that begin to ease.

Best for: Spring break travelers who embrace the energy. Families and quieter travelers should target late March specifically.

April

Weather: Warm and sunny, 85–90°F (29–32°C), starting to feel hot

Crowds: Moderate — drops significantly after spring break

Prices: Moderate — good value relative to January–March

April is one of the most underrated months to visit Cabo. Spring break is over, the weather is still beautiful — warm enough to swim comfortably, not yet oppressively hot — and hotel rates drop noticeably from their peak. Early April in particular hits a sweet spot: conditions are as good as February with a fraction of the crowds.

Water temperatures warm through April, making snorkeling and swimming increasingly enjoyable. Fishing remains excellent as marlin season builds.

Best for: Families, value-conscious travelers, and anyone who wants good weather without the peak-season premium. One of our top recommended windows.

May

Weather: Hot, 88–95°F (31–35°C), low humidity

Crowds: Low — one of the quietest months

Prices: Low to moderate — significantly below peak

May is the beginning of the shoulder season and offers some of the best value in the Cabo calendar. The heat is real — afternoons can be genuinely hot — but mornings and evenings are still pleasant, and the sea is warm and clear. Humidity remains low compared to the summer months.

Crowds are minimal, hotels are readily available at lower rates, and the resort experience is noticeably more relaxed. The marlin fishing is excellent in May and continues through the summer. If you’re comfortable with heat and want excellent conditions at lower prices, May is a smart choice.

Best for: Value-focused travelers, fishing enthusiasts, and anyone who doesn’t mind warm afternoons. One of the best months for a quieter Cabo trip.

June

Weather: Hot and increasingly humid, 90–95°F (32–35°C)

Crowds: Low

Prices: Low — some of the best rates of the year

June marks the beginning of summer in Cabo, and while the heat and humidity increase, it’s still manageable. Humidity is higher than the winter months but not at the peak levels of August. Hotel rates drop significantly, and the resort experience is quieter and more relaxed.

The main consideration in June is that hurricane season officially begins, though actual storms in June are very rare. Most travel insurance policies cover hurricane disruptions, so this is less of a practical concern than it sounds. If you’re booking in June, factor this in and choose a policy with appropriate coverage.

Best for: Budget-conscious travelers who can handle heat and want a genuinely uncrowded resort experience.

July & August

Weather: Hot and humid, 95–100°F+ (35–38°C), afternoon storms possible

Crowds: Moderate — domestic Mexican tourism picks up

Prices: Low to moderate

July and August are the least popular months for international visitors to Cabo, and for understandable reasons — the heat and humidity are at their peak, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the overall conditions are far from ideal for outdoor activities. The beach experience in the middle of a July afternoon is genuinely uncomfortable.

That said, August in particular sees an uptick in Mexican domestic tourism, so Cabo is far from empty. And if you visit primarily for morning beach time, restaurant experiences, and evenings out, the heat is manageable with the right expectations.

Hurricane risk increases through August, though direct hits on Los Cabos are historically infrequent. Hurricane Odile in 2014 was the most significant in recent decades — a good reminder that the risk exists even if it’s not the norm.

Best for: Travelers on tight budgets who can work around the heat. Fishing is excellent in summer — marlin season peaks in July and August.

Not ideal for: Families with young children, travelers sensitive to heat, or anyone wanting optimal beach conditions.

September & October

Weather: Hot, humid, with the highest hurricane risk of the year

Crowds: Very low — the quietest time of year

Prices: Lowest of the year

September and October carry the highest hurricane risk in the Los Cabos calendar. While a direct hit is not common, the risk is real enough that most experienced Cabo travelers avoid these months unless they’re specifically seeking the lowest possible prices and are comfortable with the trade-off.

If you do visit in September or October, book refundable rates or comprehensive travel insurance. The weather on good days is warm and beautiful, crowds are minimal, and rates are at their annual floor. Late October specifically can be excellent — storms become less likely, temperatures begin to ease, and you capture the very beginning of the high-season run-up.

Best for: Budget travelers comfortable with weather risk, or those targeting very late October as an entry point into the high season.

Not ideal for: Families, first-time visitors, or travelers without flexible schedules.

November

Weather: Warm and sunny, 80–85°F (27–29°C), humidity dropping

Crowds: Low to moderate — shoulder season

Prices: Moderate — below peak but rising toward the holiday surge

November is one of our favorite months to visit Cabo and arguably the best value window in the calendar. The weather is excellent — summer heat and humidity have broken, skies are reliably clear, and the Sea of Cortez is warm from the summer months. It’s genuinely close to perfect conditions.

Crowds are still light in early November before Thanksgiving, and hotel rates are meaningfully below the December–February peak. US Thanksgiving week brings a surge that rivals January in terms of prices and demand — if you’re visiting around Thanksgiving, book early and expect premium rates.

Best for: Almost everyone. If you can be flexible about the specific week, early-to-mid November is the single best value-to-conditions ratio of the year. Our top recommendation.

December

Weather: Perfect, 75–82°F (24–28°C), very low humidity

Crowds: Very high from mid-December through New Year’s

Prices: Peak — Christmas and New Year’s are the most expensive dates of the year

December is split into two very different experiences. Early December — the first two weeks — offers some of the best conditions of the year at moderate prices, with excellent weather and manageable crowds. This is the window serious Cabo travelers have been keeping quiet for years.

From around December 15 through January 2, Cabo becomes one of the most festive and expensive resort destinations in North America. The New Year’s celebration is genuinely extraordinary — fireworks over the arch, restaurants buzzing, and an energy that’s hard to match. If this is what you want, it’s worth every penny. If you want a quieter experience at lower prices, target early December instead.

Best for: Early December for best conditions with moderate crowds. Mid-December through New Year’s for peak celebration — book 6–12 months in advance.

spring evenings in Cabo provide beautiful weather and sunsets

When Is Cabo Best for Specific Activities?

Whale watching: December through April, peak in February and March. Gray whales and humpbacks migrate through the Sea of Cortez. Book a tour with a reputable operator out of Cabo San Lucas or La Paz.

Fishing: Year-round, with seasonal variation. Marlin season peaks June through November. Tuna and dorado are excellent spring through fall. The famous Cabo sportfishing is best in summer and fall when water temperatures are highest — but this conflicts with the worst weather months.

Surfing: The Pacific-side breaks near Cabo San Lucas and along the East Cape are best in summer — June through October — when southern swells are strongest. Todos Santos (about an hour north on the Pacific) is one of the best surf destinations in Baja year-round.

Snorkeling and diving: Water visibility is best October through May. Cabo Pulmo — a marine reserve about 90 minutes north of the East Cape — has some of the best diving in Mexico and is worth the drive year-round.

Whale sharks: The Sea of Cortez near La Paz hosts whale shark aggregations from October through April, with November through March being the most reliable window.

Summer in Los Cabos is hot, but with great waves for surfing

FAQs About When to Visit Cabo

What is the best month to visit Cabo?

November is the best single month for most travelers — near-perfect weather, the warmest sea water of the cooler season, and prices that are noticeably below the December–February peak. Early December is a close second. For the absolute best weather with no budget constraints, January through March is unbeatable.

What is the cheapest time to visit Cabo?

September and October are the cheapest months, but carry the highest hurricane risk. May and June offer a good balance of lower prices and good weather. Early November is the best combination of low prices and excellent conditions.

What is the worst time to visit Cabo?

September is the most risky month due to hurricane season, followed by August for heat and humidity. That said, Cabo rarely sees direct hurricane hits, and budget travelers willing to accept the risk can find genuinely excellent deals.

Is Cabo good in summer?

It depends on your tolerance for heat. Temperatures regularly exceed 95°F (35°C) in July and August, with significant humidity. The beaches are beautiful but afternoon activities become uncomfortable. Early mornings and evenings are pleasant, and hotel rates are significantly lower. Fishing is excellent in summer.

Is Cabo safe year-round?

The resort areas of Los Cabos — the hotel zone, the Tourist Corridor, and the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo — are considered among the safest tourist areas in Mexico year-round. Standard travel precautions apply.

How many days do you need in Cabo?

Four to five nights is the sweet spot for most visits — enough time to experience both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, take a day trip or two, and settle into the resort. A week allows for a slower pace and easy day trips to Cabo Pulmo or Todos Santos.

When should I book my Cabo hotel?

For peak season (December–March), book 3–6 months in advance for the best properties. For spring break weeks and New Year’s, 6–12 months is not excessive for the top resorts. For shoulder season, 4–8 weeks is generally sufficient.
